My grain has started to go down.

Here in central NY I've never seen anything quite like it. Floods started back on May 11. Lots of corn is little and yellow. Lots of hay undone. Fields unplanted. Wash outs everywhere. My wheat is the only decent crop I've got. It's still standing, but I don't know what it's doing. 2" rain over the weekend. No end/change in sight. This is the first time I recall thinking the mega/factory dairies might not be able to gather enough forage.

Don't be surprised if I start complaining of being dry before too long. All the events lately, when they were getting inches a few miles from me,I was getting tenths. Now they've pretty much taken the rain out of the forecast the rest of the week. Things could go the other way in a big hurry here.

Lots of wheat left to cut in texas and oklahoma yet because of the rain too. It's looking awful dark and the weeds are taking over. Looks like its wet all over, I'm in In. now and there is water everywhere, Il. was the same.

Maybe time to put pick-up guards on the swather or header to save more of the grain. When we only had pull type swathers, we had to swath down grain by going against the direction the straw was pointed and then go back to the other end of the field without cutting anything. Worked much better when we put in pick-up guards. Those guards may still be in the old machine shed at the farm unless brother sold them to someone else.

Ya,I'd just about bet that the center pivots will be running by Saturday if we don't get significant rain before then.

And here in Sask. we really need rain. Had to wait til 10 last night to bale hay as it was so hot and dry it would just build up hay on the pickup and plug the old 847. Supposed to be near 90 again today with a chance of rain tonight. It would be worth a lot if it happens.

My wheat didn't go down, but only because the stand was thinner. We've had too much rain. I cut on Thursday until the wobble box broke and I had to order parts. The seed wheat field made 40 BPA but the berries were all shriveled. It went to town. Every other field I cut made 10. It rained on Friday morning and pigweed has taken over the 80 south of the house. There's nothing worth cutting there even if I do get parts tomorrow. Calling insurance today. The 560 I put in beans has got to do something good.

I'm in same boat as rrlund. Trying to decide if I have the fortitude to cut and bale hay this week. I was very ill and hospitalized over the weekend. That said, looked at hayfields yesterday, most not looking as promising as even a few days ago. Yields going to be down. All the rain that missed rrlund missed us too. Either went north or south of us. That said, oat crop looking pretty good.going to be turning color soon.

we have had 22 inches of rain since the first of june. i have about 15 acres of corn that are drowned out, and 30 or so acres of soybeans gone. had another inch and a half of rain last nite. sheesh. neighbor didn't put any pre-emergent on his fields and hasent had a sprayer come thru his beans as yet. field full of water hemp and ragweed. too wet to get a spray rig in there. what a mess.

My brome has gone down in spots. Real PIA to mow with an old IH 100 mower - can't even see where you have and haven't mowed.

I'm in central NY too - not much dry hay going on. This is the latest start I've ever gotten. Super dry May, so the hay got a slow start and super wet June, so you can't get it in - hopefully July goes back to dry

(quoted from post at 03:30:27 06/29/15) Too much rain, and it has flattened much of my grain . GRRRRR I am sick of rain.
feel your pain but i rather have to much rain then no rain at all.
In a wet year there is plenty pasture and a bad hay crop is better than none at all... one can still graze it if need be.

Drought is another matter.
I am in a "ell of a pickle.
We had only 1" of rain since april 1 and no rain in the near forecast either.
My pastures are already bare and there is no regrowth, the animals are losing the battle for feed with the grasshopper infestation that also has sprung up(i counted well over a 100 per sq yard).
The meager hay crop is also disappearing fast.
Them filthy little critters eat it faster than i can cut it and by the time it is cured there may be nothing left to bale :(
Hay is already going for $250/ton not including trucking and there is little to be had to start with.

We were in your boat in '10 and '11 so I empathize.

Portable chicken houses work great for grasshopper control but I know that is not practical on your scale.

We haven't had very many this year. So much rain has drowned the little buggers.

The pick-up guards do not have to replace all of the guards. If I recall correctly, we spaced them 15 - 20 inches apart (however that works out with the guard spacing). and that lifted all the downed grain stalks enough to make a good cut underneath.

I feel for you!! We were in the position in 2012, then the fires started.
Send me an email, I want to talk to you about your critters. Might be able to help you out.
