best mounted picker

I might be going to look at a Oliver #4 mounted picker this weekend to put on my 77 as you never see much Oliver stuff in my area of Ohio it got me wondering what's everyone's options on the best mounted picker? Pictures are welcomed!

My observation is, using a mounted picker might be compared to riding a motorcycle. When everything's right it's good, but when conditions aren't good it's miserable. One problem is mud and getting stuck, another is dust. When it's dusty you're in the middle of it. I know of more than one old school farmer that died with "farmer's lung". I remember the neighbor that opened our fields with a Super M and New Idea picker looking like he just came out of a coal mine. On the other hand if it's mostly for play and you can choose your situation, don't let anyone discourage you.

And I liked using that mounted picker a lot better than a pull type. Not neer as tired at end of day.

Best picker? Probably the IH 234 with JD 237 and Oliver 83 pretty close behind. New Idea was pretty decent. It all depends who you ask. I think just as someone else said that they are best for show and not so much for production due to mud or dust depending on the conditions.

Ford won the national picking contest several years in the late 50's and early 60's. They were designed to save most all of the grain that did get shelled during picking. They were the favorite around our area and still my favorite today, guess thats why we have 5 of them!!! lol

Im going to say the best mounted picker I have seen is the 234 IH. I have been around most brands and have studied the jobs pickers have done at Walnut ILL and HCOP as well as have been around a 234 a lot with my neighbor that runs one. The 234s husk very well, have stripper plates preventing shelling and have a lot of capacity.

We have always ran ACs and New Ideas on our farm and currently run a New Idea pull type simply for the fact that it is cleaner and you can use a tractor with a cab. The New Idea always has clean corn but there is a fair amount of field shelling. I own a 190 AC that I have used a few years, they are great for field loss, there is hardly any. But they are slower and very very dirty to run and are not the easiest to mount. The 170 and 190 pickers won a fair amount of picking contests but still are not the best picker built.
