Tillage verse no till this year!

So this year I no tilled 18 acers of corn into corn stalks! And I mold board plowed the other 30 which were also corn stalks! Now yes I probly should of sprayed my no till ground before I planted! But I hire a guy and he comes one and does it all! Now since this year it keeps raining and raining and can't get the spraying done! Im wondering how much of a yield loss I will have on my no tilled ground cause the weeds are growing like crazy! And my plowed ground is pretty dang clean yet! Would I been further ahead this year and plowed all my ground I'm thinking so as of know! But HIND SIGHT is 2020 My corn is all around knee high so it needs a sprayer soon! Joys of farming!

Corn does not like weed competition so there is definitely a yield penalty at this point. On lighter texture soil or fields that have significant slope to them no-till works fairly well but the farmer has to be on top and timely with his weed control program. Several days of rain will throw anybody for a loop but for the future plan on doing something immediately after the planter rolls through. Dual and Atrazine work just fine in either system although any existing weeds need to be "burned" via glyphosate at the same time.

I've found a difference this year between moldboard plowed and chisel plowed. The only field I didn't spray with a pre was moldboard plowed. I tried to spray that Tuesday morning and came way too close to getting stuck. I went in to another low field that was chisel plowed and emptied out the sprayer. I finished that one last night. I hope to get on that plowed ground in the morning and finish it up. It's not all that weedy, but it needs to be hit soon. I planted it around the 16th of May.

Plowing and working ground is not cheap. Why not spray before you plant. One trip never worked for us. When are you going to knife in Nitrogen? Did you put it on both fields before you planted. No-till corn will yield with convential if stand is the same and you knife in Nitrogen.

I should point out just so you are clear on this that Dual is a pre-emergence herbicide and your well past the point for using Atrazine so that plan is for next year. If you are knee high you better consult your fertilizer-chemical salesman for what is approved in your area. You may have to find a cultivator and find out how easily you can move your wheels on one of your tractors.

Yep,

Next year, I'm plowing the whole she-bang, so help me. Just too many advantages and I'm not the least bit lazy.

casenut1 I think you got things mixed up. Atrazine is for BORAD leaf weeds and has a small effect on some types of grass.

To be successful at no till you have to be on top of the management of all the steps. You really need to burn down weeds way before you plant. Any weed growth uses up some of the nutrients that the corn crop needs.

This year no till really looks tough around here. The cool wet spring is inhibiting root growth and it is showing. The worst looking fields are corn no tilled into soybean stubble. The conventional corn is 2-3 stages ahead of the no till corn this year. Then add in some spotty stands in the no till verses just about perfect stands in the conventional tillage fields. IN this growing season it looks like the no till fields will have a big yield drag. Next year it could be the opposite.

Every year has new challenges. I have found in our notill the closer that sprayer is to the planter the better off we are. I no tilled into alfalfa and thought no way would anything grom. The corn is coming along with the heat. I am sure you all have opinions but we have to use extreme soil erosion control on some highly erodible land. Biggest thing we have learned is that the no-till ground needs to be warm and we didnt see warm soil until late may. Our best looking corn is no-till on beans that was planted around the 20th.

:planted no till most of last 30 yrs ,,and will not give it up. the expense for chemicals nearly out weighs the tillage fuel ,,not to mention , time and wear and tear .../however,, last yr , and this yr , I have workt my ground ,, chisled everthing last yr , except for 10 acres beans no tillt after pullin out of crp..this yr chiseld all corn ground and disced the bean ground a good 4 inches deep, had the best crop ever last yr . except for the no til,,.this yr I have near perfect stands everywhere ,, been sorta dry , roots went down for water in the loose dirt ,and looks terrific ,neighbor always no tils and always has good lookin crops too .. don't know how hard his ground was from all thespring rains,, but mine was HARD...

I like a hot burn down and then plant. You will be back in it anyway to clean it up before a good canopy. Have the coop come out and look at it. They may be able to help you. If you have ragweed, Palmer or mares tail you will struggle to get rid of them if they are tall. There's a cocktail for it but it may make that corn a little sickly.
