L 3540 Hsts In order to change trans. filter, Is there a way to shut off fluid before I take off filter?? 2 winters ago when it was freezing a$$ cold I tried to change fuel filter and that little spring shot out never found it. I was 2 miles from home & tractor died in the road that I was pushing snow on. So no suprises !!!

When I chanrge my Kubota M7040 hyd filters I insert a shop vac nozzle in filler hole & turn it on to create a vacuum in trans so very little oil leaks out.

I use the shop vac method. I use duct tape to attach it to the fill tube.

Vacum works as the other poster says pretty easy to find a ditch or bank and tilt the tractor where the filter is on the hi side. You will LOOAE some but if you have ever thing ready won,t loos much. Shop vac or ditch..no shut off.

Several yrs ago I tried placing LH tires in deep ditch on a M4900 to change hyd filters to no avail as I still lost more oil than I wanted to. I'd rather use the shop vac method.
