Briggs valve removal

On June 9th, I posted a picture of a valve seat that had come loose on a Briggs engine. I've got it all apart now except for getting the valve out. What kind of a "keeper" is on the valve stem? I haven't been successful in getting it off. Clues, ideas, thoughts? All are welcome. Thanks. Ron

I think it will be a flat 'U' shape that sets up in spring retainer. have to compress spring to see it. have seen small pins also. should be plain after that retainer is lifted.

The spring retainer is the keeper. It has a hole off - center so when the spring is compressed, you move it sideways to get the valve stem lined up with that hole . Clear as mud? Very simple once you see it.

I was the one that just did one, too. I can't recall whether yours is intake or exhaust.

One is a washer about the size of a quarter with a slot in it. Move it off center and it comes loose. The other is a pain. After compressing the spring (and keeping the valve from lifting at the same time) you move a retainer washer and there is a split shell retainer. The two halves fall apart. It is easy to take out. A bear to put in. My advice is take a paper towel and shove it in the oil return hole (if it is a horizontal shaft engine). You don't want one of those retainer halves falling down there. And they will, trust me. Thank the Lord for long reach magnets.

I got mine all done in about an hour after making a compressor tool. I took a large washer and cut a slot in it so that it would go down around the valve stem. I then welded that washer to a tie rod separating fork (I call them pickle forks). That new tool made it much easier.

It probably uses these. Compress the spring somewhat and slide it over sideways to release. I generally use a screwdriver or two. Little more difficult to reinstall but not too bad.

You didn't mention if it've OHV or flat head. If it's OHV Go to Auto Zone and rent a valve spring compressor. They charge for a deposit and you get a full refund when you return the too.
