First time poster so go easy on me. According to the serial number, I have a 1955 ford 850 tractor. Last winter the hydraulics quit working altogether. cold weather always made it very slow but it never stopped working. Now that it has warmed up here in Michigan I started the tractor and the lift arms and the loader will both work but it shudders when I lift or lower them. I need to put this thing back to work, where do I start diagnosing this problem. Any help would be much appreciated. The manual lists 17 "special tools" to rebuild this system. Do really need all that stuff?

Check on the Ford board, but shuddering may be a lack of oil getting to the pump.....might be a plugged screen on the input side. Best to get an operator manual, also a service manual.

The slow cold hydraulics is typical, thinner oil will help. The no movement in freezing weather could be water in the oil. Shuddering sounds like pump valve problems.

You'll get more specific answers on the Ford board below.
