And this is why they are cracking down so much on trailers.... Read online yesterday that Texas will now need trailer inspections done. You should of seen some of the trailers they showed. I wouldn't pull them around in a field let alone down the road.. Of course people arnt too happy, but Whatever.. I for one am for it. Someone gonna killed

Couple of years ago I sold a B JD to a fellow. He said I have to go pickup a truck a few miles from you and I will stop at look at the tractor on the way back home. He pulls in the drive way with a Ford Bronco sitting on his trailer with no chains or straps at all. He bought my tractor and I told him you won't leave my place with it unless it's chained down. He wasn't happy with me when I told him, you don't chain it down you don't buy it

You might notice, I waited for a red light to get close to take pic. Had he taken a right he would have been going to the main entrance of a US penitentiary. The only place in the country that executes prisoners.

Really...... , I live in Texas and I haven't heard a thing. They are big on passing laws and keeping the laws a secret. A while back they passed a law stating you had to have safety chains on your trainer and I had an old trailer that was built before the law went into effect. The way I found out about the safety chain law is when I was getting a ticket.

......and that law states that the safety chain attachment to the trailer can NOT be by welding.

I expect that they have been inspecting heavier trailers for a long time. I believe that if the trailer is heavy enough to make the combination likely to be over 26,000 inspection is required. I can't say what the break point is but my dual tandem gooseneck has required inspection for years.

Hey George, if you happen to be there to catch me making my one mistake of the year on Dec. 31 I suppose that will make me a stupid person.

Here is a link Steve. There are many other stuff out there if you Google it. A lot of the inspection stations dont even know about it yet. http://www.chron.com/sports/article/Law-requires-that-trailers-get-safety-inspections-6115851.php

Yep we got trailer inspections here in Texas. Don't weather its all or above certain GVW. On safty chains law may say no weld but go look at Big-Tex trailers they are welded.

"New Law"
I may be reading it wrong.....
But the way I read it inspections have always been required on trailers 4501 lbs or more;
They are just tying the inspection sticker in with your plate now so they can make sure you have an inspection.

In Louisiana trailers with one axle and two tires; and all boat trailers are exempt from inspection.

That link didn't complete but I did google Texas Trailer 2015 and the first item was the Houston Chronicle article. One thread of info in the article of interest to me was the palsey little two worder: ...........all.... bla bla....will have to ....bla bla....EXCEPT FARM TRAILERS, bla bla........

Yea we won again.

(quoted from post at 19:28:58 06/13/15) "safety chain attachment to the trailer can NOT be by welding"

I can understand this law because there is no way to tell how strong the weld is by looking at it
But Texas is the only state that has the no welding law.

I started doing inspections on commercial vehicles in 1991. On of the things the instructor stressed when I got my certification was that safety chains could not rely on just welding to the frame, If they are welded they could be made to pass if they were also bolted to the frame with the proper strength hardware.

Ever have to USE a safety chain? I did!! I just happened to be heading into the big city to pick up a car for a friend. As we proceeded along the interstate, for whatever reason, the receiver came loose from the hitch, and the dolly we were pulling started going crazy. I immediately saw something wrong in my mirror, and immediately headed for the shoulder to get things under control. Safety chains saved the day, damage was minimal, and the receiver (installed by the leasing company) was re-inserted with a makeshift clevis pin. Found a trailer supply place in the city and replaced the missing hardware.

As to the stupid part, I agree with this one for sure.

It's idiots like that kill people and make us common sense guys look bad . We always use 4 chains kris crossed on everything that goes on the trailer . By the way our 14000 llb trailer is built in Texas and all the pockets and rings are welded on and it's a 2009 . I suppose wholes can be drilled to anchor the chain hooks for the new trailers to be in compliance with the state law .

Not too long ago there was a trailer that crossed the median and struck an on coming car, killing the driver. Not sure what happened or why it was able to separate from the towing vehicle, but I'm sure the guy driving the truck got a hefty fine at the last and involuntary manslaughter at the most. Didn't hear much in the news about it after the fact.

Colin, Trailers over 3000 lbs GVW are required to be inspected annually here in NH. Also, trailers over 1500 lbs GVW are required to have working brakes.
Dave

My boss at my last job had about a 50 hp Kubota loader tractor on his trailer on the highway, no chains, and lost it. This happened before I started there. But boy did I hear stories. He used it at the shop for clearing snow in the winter, and he had some land he used it to help clear that used to be a tree farm.

He could have finesse if he really needed it, but he was more of a hammer it in type of person most of the time.

Thanks Dave, That means I need to get the little one done too.

See the Red Stop in top of pic? Driver was stopped. No way I could snap a pic if I wasn't, truck shakes too much.

I too have a terramite, like in the pic. They only weigh 3100#. The DIY place that rents
them only has a single axle trailer, most it could be is 7K. I have a 14k trailer and
use 8 independent tie points and drop stabilizers and both buckets.

One time I accidently almost put my trailer in friends lake. Had I not used 8 tie down
points, tractor, trailer and truck would have taken a swim after makine a 25 ft dive to
the water below. Glad I took the time to strap it down good.

If you own one, a T5C, there are features that stand out, especially the strong roll cage, color.

But what is it? A tractor with attachments? Dedicated build unit for some purpose? What is it used for?
