bear sighting in SC

It musta happened, it was in the newspaper, with pics.

Spartanburg, SC. 80 or so pound black bear spotted on Otis Blvd, which is in the middle of an old, very nice neighborhood. It climbed a tree and dozed on a limb for a while. Wildlife officers called. They watched the bear and eventually it got down and left. They followed it to some woods. Wildlife officers would like to put a tracking collar on one or more to see if they are staying around or just passing through. I've gotten along just fine for all my life without bears around here and I would like to keep it that way.

KEH, We have bear every little bit show up here in our area.
They don't bother anything of ours, but the bee keepers in the upper part of Oconee have a lot of trouble with them.
Of course this one hangs out in our garden a lot.

A black bear sow and her cubs watched me work my bean field a couple weeks back. We have one that fixes my wife's bird feeders regularly. There was one hit by a car along the road a few miles from my house last week.

One showed on my son"s trail cam a couple days ago. Sighted in Manannah and Pearl Lake recently. (Meeker and Stearns Cty) Friend in Morrison County has them very commonly, attacking the bird feeder.

Not unusual to see them here in Virginia, but this bozo has developed a taste for bird boxes. He has torn down and destroyed five of them in the last week. Eating the cat food was one thing, but messing with my Blue Birds is over the line.

To repel bears in West Virginia my FIL hooked up an electric fence to a 4x8 wire mesh platform he made and put a bucket of birdseed in the middle. They had to have at least one foot on the ground to get shocked but the ones that got jolted never came back.

I grew up with black bears. More a nuisance than dangerous. They'll tear up your garbage, raid your grain bins, generally make a mess in the middle of the night. Short of coming between a sow and her cubs or cornering one you don't have to be any more cautious than you do around a big, strange dog.

agree with Bret.
In the area where I hunt, black bears are very common and just a nuisance.
Hearing the neighbor lady banging pots and chasing after a bear is funny and often.
95% of black bears.....just tell them to beat it..and they run away.
(gave the 5% for the occasional one in a bad mood. Those you [i:9da6506c05]firmly[/i:9da6506c05] tell to beat it.)
Got some pictures somewhere of a couple of big ol black bears coming out on a very hot day to swim in the camp pond,
while we sat on the deck about 70 feet away.
Hey, it was hot, we let them be, they left after an hour or so.

funny...bears like to wander. My home area which is about 120 miles north of camp and is starting to get these wanderers.
Panic! LOL

Late in the fall one of my dogs found one denned up under a blown down balsam.I think it was the same one that broke into one of my camps.Anyway I crawled halfway into the den and took a picture which didn't turn out that good. Not a big bear,200 lbs. at most.He opened his eyes but didn't act in a threatening manner. They are very lethargic once they go into hibernation. But they are unpredictable.Another time while driving down a dirt road in the early evening I saw,in the rear view mirror, a sow and two cubs cross the road behind me.The sow looked like it had something slung across it's back.I right away reversed but lost them in the brush.Just a couple of hundred yards down the road I saw a woman picking stuff up in her yard.I stopped to let her know of the bear and she asked me if i'd seen a calf she was missing.I said maybe, but it wasn't moving on it's own.
My father always said black bear kill more fawns than anything.

One of my earliest memories is my grandmother chasing a bear off our porch. Her weapon of choice? A broom.

Kinda sets the tone for the rest of your life....

Bear hit and killed by a car Monday night in Newaygo county. Next county west of us, west central Michigan. Three cubs orphaned. We have heard sketchy reports of them closer than that recently. Since we have sheep and goats, this is always a source of concern.
