Anyone ID This Weed?

I just discovered this growing VERY quickly in my oat field.... About 1 acre is COVERED in it! Of course, this is the part where the oats are growing the best.... Oats are about 15 inches, this is anywhere from ground height, up to about 12 inches. Oats are still taller in all spots, but it looks to me like they are being overtaken by what ever this is?!

Anyone have a guess??? I can't seem to find out......

I am not into weed but this might be a very good cash crop. LOL Take one to your County Extension Office they should know and tell you how to get rid of it.

Wild mint? Smell minty?

jeffcat- Are you sure that you want to test the waters this much? Kim gave you a pretty straight up warning.

BTW, I see the three bars and I feel you did not mean to imply 'Shoot".

You won't win. This is her site.

Chill.

Heard the same thing from another guy as well...

I am thinking 2 4d for sure, but I don't have a sprayer, nor can I find one to borrow.... May have to do it by hand.

Yes, the plant is a "square" so to say. It is fuzzy too.

No, I broke it in half, and messed with the leaves, no mint smell. Kind of looks/smells like "Stinging Nettle" (which is very common up here), however, it just isn't close enough to it, and I would have been RED and itchy after messing with it this much!

Don't you have a 4 wheeler and a 15 gal. spot sprayer? I am surprised. Maybe you know someone you could borrow one from.

I have a very good 4 wheeler, but my mom is TOTALLY against spraying of any sort, so we have therefore never had a need for a sprayer... Buddy of mine might have one though. He has a small orchard.... Thanks for the idea!

I don't think it is pigweed as was said. Pigweed does not have a square stem. We have it here in so. Mn. We always called it simply "square stem"

Make a deal with your Mom. She sets policy on matters of the house and garden. Your Dad sets policy on matters of equipment and crops.Try to establish early what all the boundaries on the place are.

If it's got a square stem - crunch some leaves up in your hand and smell it - you might recognize it as some kind of mint.

Looks like it - but the smell test is the best.

Either way - I'm pretty sure 24d will kill it.

Cut it and bale it with the oats, cattle will eat it. We had baled the weeds/grass off of CRP land (cropland left to sit for 20 plus years, owner paid by state(I think)) and feed it. Gave a round bale of that in the bunk in the yard and threw down some good stuff inside, the cattle stood by the bunk till it was gone.
