Colorado trip. Yeh haw!

I posted a few weeks back about trailering { is that a word?} my sons car out to Fort Collins for his summer job out there. Well we just got back and what great trip. Those of you that live in that great state are so lucky. Drove around some bad weather. Missed two tornados by about 50 miles. Got into one big rain storm and drove through a very spooky snow storm up by the Alpine visitor center at around 12,000 ft. That had a high pucker factor. Did the Royal gorge and drove up hi way 9 through Breckenridge and Dillon. Wow it was amazing. In Canon city got to stay in a room that one of my all time heroes had stayed in. Just down the hall John Wayne had stayed. Granddaughter collapsed up at the Alpine Visitor center like a rag doll. They got her some O2 and Gatorade and she was good to go in a bit. Little think was not used to the thin air. Rocky mountain park, if you have not gone.As you can see lots of snow still up high. Go, its awesome. Kids wanted to go through the Stanley motel in Estes where the Shining movie was written. Very pretty place.2,250 miles of pure pleaser. Heck I even had fun driving back across Kansas. Here’s a few pics.

There is a lot of good stuff to see out there. I've been to all those places at one time or another and they are all that you describe. Too bad you missed the harvest in Kansas. You would see more combines than you have ever seen in your life. Course, I'm incurably addicted to that life.

How true how good it is. We pack the pony up a week from today to head to rocky Mountain mustang round up in steamboat springs. Much different than the flat lands of illinois. We always stop for lunch in Estes park and go through rocky Mountain national park on the way out.

We went out on 400. Stopped at Fort Dodge and had lunch and on west through Cimarron and Pueblo and stayed the first night in Canon city. On the way home we were pretty spent. Took I-70 to Topeka then south down 75 to Yates center and 54 East to Nevada then home to Springfield MO. Dang bridge was out a Yates Center and had about a 30 mile detour. Oh well. I enjoy going through all the small towns in KS. But Momma is like an old horse we used to have. When you point her toward the house she is ready to go. About every 30 mins it’s how fast are you going. They will give you 5 mph over you know. Lol. She likes to go go go. I like to gawk and look.

Last time we were in that park was on June 20th 6 or 8 years ago and you could see snow banks cut off by plows or blowers but I never seen that much in 3 trips up there. Did You drive across the Royal George bridge?, I've done it twice, didn't have the nerve last time. Nice country, I like it.

We drove down there the first week of July. The Royal Gorge was closed due to the fire they had the year before. Most of the buildings had been burned down. Glad to hear it"s reopened. We really enjoy Canon City. We stayed at that motel years ago. Back then, they had a pool filled with trout and my sons caught some and they cooked them up for us for supper. Did you drive through the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs?

There used to be a sign in the middle of that bridge, said no fishing from bridge, think it's like 1100 feet down to the Arkansas river.

Gonna miss you, bud! 8)

For me the best part of the Colorado Springs area is the Gold Camp Road and it's free.

Stephen we went on that gold camp road on our honeymoon in 1973. Wonderful trip. At that time it was terribly rough and I was babying my new 73 Satellite along at 15-20 mph. Whenever there was a chance cars would pass me with their wheels bouncing way up into the wheel wells. I'd like to do it again sometime. Maybe for our 50th. We toured a gold mine, I've forgotten about that. We rode the elevator a half mile down into the ground. It was cold and damp down there.

Did a similar trip there and it is absolutely a great place to see. What's not to like about KS? Answer: flesh eating mosquitoes

What's holdin' ya up? Get at it and go.

Paul.......in 1955, the Sports Car Club of Denver (Colorado?), sponsored a "Mile-High" rally thru Estes Park that crossed the continental divide 9-times and ended up in Durango. Winner was a MG-TC with skinny 4x19 wire wheels and steering wheel on wrong side of car. Friend of mine in Montrose was drivin' a Jag XK-120 and thought it funny all these flatland ferriners were flashin' HI-POWER spotlites along the NARROW box canyon road. When they got thru the Ouray canyon and over Red Mountain and down into Silverton and up Treasure Mountain Pass, they hadda coast fer 60-miles at 20-mph 'cuz they got penalized for arriving too early. Remember, this was a Rally notta RACE. Then they had a concurs d'elegance.

Nice picture of yer dotter. Remember Canon is pronounced Canyon and NOT artillery canon. .......Dell

If you went down 75 you went past my place just North of Burlington, Ks.

(quoted from post at 10:20:05 06/08/15) If you ran I-70 across Kansas you missed a lot. Why would not enjoy our State?

The best 4 things I ever saw in KS was, not in this order. WECOME TO, MO, NE, OK and CO. Course being assigned to Ft Riley 3 times may have just a little to do with that opinion.

If you take the gravel road around that bridge at Yates Center its only 2 miles out of the way..

Now you tell me. I started down that way and just didnt know where it went. Didnt want to do 20 miles on gravel. Oh well got to see more country that way. Lol.
