1944 model B John Deere ( oil change )

Hello,

Looking into 1st oil change on my model b John Deere 44 in year. Wanted ask around see what oil brand to use on this old iron, I have heard some people say to use a non-detergent oil type? So what say a " John Deere brand " 10w-30 non detergent oil or " new holland brand "? If I stand corrected I think the model b Deere held 7 quarts oil.

Use detergent oil. What brand or viscosity depends on where your tractor is located. 10W-30 or 10W-40 would be a good choice for most uses. If you only run the tractor in the summer, straight 30 would be just fine.
Today's oils are far superior to what was available when the B was built so don't get overly excited about finding just the "right" oil. Fresh oil, a new filter and your tractor will be quite happy.

Do not use non detergent oil. I put Napa 10w30 in all of my gas tractors. Works well, but if your engine is dirty and full of sludge like most, I'd recommend flushing the crankcase first or physically cleaning it out.

I use Rotella 15w40 in my gas tractors, I had it on hand for the diesels and it didn't make sense not to use it. I run it in an JD A, B, 630 and IH 444. No problems in several years of use.

15/40 fleet diesel.Use that in all 15(gas or diesel) tractors,combines,trucks,motorcycles/ATVs.........

Ok ..... Thought of heading to mead tractor here in Tennessee its John Deere place here. And buying some 10w-30 oil and buying there filter I figured that would be fine to use in it. Summer here in Tennessee mostly hot and dry and winters are cold rainy and wet.

I agree, no need to get picky. No matter what you put in there, it's going to be better than what it was designed to run with. So keep it simple and use what you already buy for other vehicles.

I run 15W-40 Delvac in everything, it is a Rotella clone, it would be a good idea to manually clean the sludge out of it, no matter what oil you use.

So I bought this tractor off man in middle Tennessee area said he got it from man in Anderson tenn back in 2000? Said that guy told him that the tractor had been rebuilt and everything worked on etc. true or false I just don't know. I've looked at everything and seems to be clean I've checked oil level and oil seems to be good shape. Now that being said ....... Which is a good way to go? Non-detergent oil or regular detergent type? I've had my tractor buddy's here tell me " use non -detergent type" but I've also talk to guy I know up the road that had 2 John Deere b's, he said he ran the new holland brand master gold 10w-30 oil in both his for some time. I just don't want to get into re-placing filter after filter etc. ha ? So non or detergent ?

Buy a 2 1/2 gallon jug of 15-40 rotella or delvac, both detergent oils. That way you have enough for your oil change, plus a couple or 3 quarts left for top offs in this tractor or any other gas/diesel powered equipment you have. If you are worried about sludge, buy 2 oil filters and change the filter after 20-25 hours, and add enough oil to top it off. Only use I can think of for non detergent oil is an oil change in an air compressor pump.
