lets go back ato charging an 8 volt battery

Sometime rrecently there was a discussion on charging an 8 volt battery with a 12 volt charger. I was indicated to check battery oftern and when reached 9.4 volts, disconnect it. Am I right or wrong. Thanks Henry

Touchy subject. I use a cheap adjustable power supply and set it for about 9 volts, then keep a close watch on it. Being a retired EE, if I was going to try a 12 volt charger, I'd try one of the small trickle output types and even then watch it closely.

To prevent overcharging and boiling out electrolyte limit the charging voltage at the battery to 10 volts for an 8 volt battery, 7.5 for 6 volt and 15 for 12 volt. Use a small charger in the 6-10 amp range and disconnect when it reaches 10 volts at the battery terminals.

I agree with 46M. Use a six volt charger. It will work fine. That's how people charged eight volt batteries back in the day.

Most 6v chargers will put out more than 6v and they will charge your 8v just fine thats the way i have done it. Just check volts when charging at the 6v rate.

The best way to recharge an 8 volt battery is to replace it with a 6 volt. If the correct cables are used, and all connections are clean, bright, and tight, the 6 volt will "get er done".
