Odd clutch problem 97 Goe Tracker

So I put on a new clutch cable because the one it had on it seemed to adjust it self every time you drove it and got to grinding gear. New cable on yesterday and adjusted. Drove to town today and same problem. Figure maybe the adjustment nut is getting bad and moving as you use the clutch. Installed 2 extra nuts on just to make sure that is not it. Any body ever had a problem like this??? Any idea as to what is going on??
Thanks

old,

I've had several geo trackers that had issues with the synchro's, gear clash in cooler weather.

Not much help for you, sorry.

I do have a thick Chilton's type manual though. If you need a page, let me know.

I have a shop manual but believe me it does not cover an odd problem like this one. This is the 2nd Geo Tracker I have had so done a lot of stuff to them over the years.

You most likely will find the cross shaft in the pedal assembly is twisting in the lever that pulls the cable. This is a weak point. I have fixed several by taking the pedal assembly down and out, taking the bushings for the shaft out of the mount and welding it back together using a 5/8 cross shaft instead of the little one. Without the bushings the 5/8 fits fine. Grease the shaft and tube well and it will last longer than the truck.

Just mark the position of the pedal and the lever before removing then put the lever back on allowing for the slippage so the cable will work again.

I know of several older Ford trucks that had a problem with maintaining the clutch adjustment. It was caused by rusted out front cab mounts. Replaced the cab mounts and the issue was solved. Maybe the Tracker might have similar issues?

hose old Fords didn't even need to rust....the firewall was so thin & un-braced, you could watch them flex as bud operated the clutch!
