I would like to live trap a coon! I have couple of feral cats that take care of mice rats ect.
What bait could I use coons that wouldn't attract cats??
Thanks

There is a leg trap made just for coons that you use cat food in but in theory a cat will not be harmed by it. I say in theory because while most will not you have that one that does get trapped. I know because I have one of those leg traps and a cat did get trapped by it

If you have live trap (the kind with the trip down ends), I have had great success with a whole egg in the bait, for lack of a better word, box. HTH....luck.

A cat will eat or at least investigate about anything.
Some things that cats may not be to interested in would be;
Corn; Marshmallows with a sweetener such as syrup or jelly; or a piece of fruit.

If you did not have the cats the best thing to use would be the stinkiest piece of fish you can find.

Hope you don't use leg hold traps. I think this is the meanest thing a person can do to a animal. A lot of states have outlawed them already. Just my opinion. Stan

If you are thinking about trapping a coon to make a pet out of, forget it. You have to get them when they are only a few days old. A friend and I tried taming down some older coons years ago. Didn't work.

I have had good luck with honey.Good thing about live (box) traps is if you catch a cat you can free him with out harm.Be sure and check it daily...

I feed my feeder cattle a ration that is basically ground corn. I bait the raccoon traps with just a bit of that. The cats are not attracted to it. Works pretty well for me.

When I was baiting bear a few years ago I used dog food on one site and it seem to bring in the coon from miles around. They did not stay long when the bear came in

When I trapped coons I used marshmallows and blueberry coon lure, in a live trap. I tried sardines but all I got were cats.

If you plan on relocating do not bring them near me! I HATE raccoon! I would do my best to whoop anybody relocating them on our place!

My daughters and I trapped coon in season and PB was the best bait we found. Like Eric says, sweet corn a week before pickin time. lol I have had coons devastate young chickens in the barn before. Then the nasty buggers poop everywhere!

I am glad that fur prices have come back up some!

I have no qualms about leg traps either. We do check thjem frequently and dispatch the quarry as quickly and humanely as possible.

All of the above will work, it just depends on what you want to catch. I have been using three marsh mellow in my live traps and have had very good luck catching just coons. I put them just under the trip at the far end of the trap. That way the coon can not reach in from the side and get them. The cats don't seam to eat march mellow. I did however get one skunk but they are no big issue either. Just gently drape a tarp over the trap and be slow in your movements. Remember the skunk is just as scared as you and he just wants out.

A raccoon will eat almost anything. In a trap I would put something in it that has a lot of odor to it. I first started attracting raccoons when I was trying to save fish from a pond that dried up. When I started throwing out dead fish I started having raccoons showing up at my shop. I have since cut back to three raccoons I'm feeding with dry cat food.

I forgot to mention. 43 coons and one skunk. All nicely relocated at my x-wife's house on the way to work at 5 in the
morning. This makes me grin every time I think about it.
