1755 Oliver Diesel Battery

I have a diesel 1755 Oliver. When I got it the battery it had was the kind of thing I would find on my F-150. I just went with it and now that thing is done for. My manual says I need two of those big 6 volt batteries, they cost about $95 each at Tractor Supply. Do I need those or could I just get one of those commercial 12 volt batteries? I guess I am planning on getting the 6 volts but my charger is only for 12 volt batteries and I don't want to have to get another one of those.

Thanks for the help.

For best results and longer battery life, you need the two '6s' in series to deliver the correct required amperage. One '21' simply doesnt have enough poop.Oh sure it start it fine in warm/hot weather.......Yes you CAN charge two 6s with a 12v charger, simply charge in series.

Hello Up Oliver,

You can go with 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. But they may be more expensive then the 2 sixes. The 6 volt batteries will work as well. The right size cables for the application is all you need!

Guido.

Thank you very much. I have noticed easier starting in warm weather. It is 53 today and the commercial 12 volt I have off another tractor could not start it, so now I got that battery on the charger. Obviously I have even worse luck when it is 10 degrees outside. Glad to hear I can charge in series with my current charger.

Thanks again for the information.

Thanks Guido. I plan to go with the 6 volts. I don't think two 12 volts will fit on my battery tray any way. But I am looking forward to finally getting the right juice on there for what the tractor needs.

Thanks again.

Hello Up Oliver,

Your choice. Make sure the connections are tight and clean. She'll crank just fine,

Guido.'

We put just one of those large 12 volt batteries on our 1855 and it works fine. The starter went out on it so we upgraded to a gear reduction starter last fall. Really woke her up, and last year it would start in the teens without being plugged in and no pre heat. Battery is over 10 years old now.

Get the two sixes and hook them up in series like the book says. IMHO forget two 12s in parallel. I hate that setup and have converted everything I have as batteries go bad out of warranty. The two 12 set up usually means when one battery goes bad it will wreck the other.

No need for another charger, just hook up to the Bat side of the starter and ground.

When batteries are run in series the crankings amps will only be as strong as the weakest battery or the lower rated one. When they are run parallel then the cranking amps are added together.

Since you would be buying two batteries for a 12v system, it looks like the best benefit might be running 2-12v batts in parallel. Either way, good quality cables and connections will be your friend.

If one series battery failed, it will open the circuit or drop voltage in half or real low, if a parallel battery goes down, you will lose capacity but still have decent voltage and might get by. There is a reason almost nothing modern with multiple batteries run in series, for that matter anything else electrical either.

As I remember the battery box has a divider to keep the batteries apart. How did you cut out the divider?

I had a Case 2590 that used 2 12volt batteries, but ended up using only one. Didn't use it much in cold weather and got along fine. Seemed like 1 battery lasted about as long as two.

The bolts that hold the lid on go between the 2 6 volts. We just left it off as the cover got ran over any way and tied the battery down with an old ratchet strap.

Hello DeltaRed,

Battery capacity is the key, whether they are in series or parallel. If he had a single battery with the correct CCA for the application, she would turn over just fine,

Guido.

I have just converted 2 tractors over from 2 6 volts to 1 group 31 12 volt. One is an IH 856 and the other is an IH 656. Both start a lot better now. Less cables and connections to worry about. The 656 has glow plugs and even after running them it still has plenty to turn the tractor over and start it. I have a friend that has also done it to his 1066, 1256, backhoe and forklift. I had to make a couple of battery trays for them, but wasn't that difficult to do.
