So wahut axtuilly hoppined??? Whut's allthet scrap iron in the bottom asides tha axcil ends????

Yep, 'til you have to remove the remains of the crosspin retaining bolt, then find out how loosely the new crosspin fits in the carrier!

I had something similar happen on a 12 bolt rear end in an 80 Chevy... Mine broke the same way but my ring gear managed to pick it up and bring it around in between it and the pinion. It blew the ring gear right out of the side of the rear end housing! I was doing about 60 at the time. The only thing I could salvage was the brakes. It locked up so hard and fast that it twisted the axle shafts.

I have actually seen this happen a number of times when I was "in the business". The "pumpkin" starts getting "oblong" where the cross pin goes through and the resultant rocking breaks the retaining pin. The cross pin slides out and snaps off and the axle moves in and the retaining clips fall off.

The same thing that happens in tractors once and a while,, the spider gears start gaulding to the pin, then the pin is forced to turn, then the anchor pin shears,,and then the pin starts to wander in and out till it smacks the pinion gear and starts to get broken into small pieces,, after that on this model rear end it lets the axle keepers fall out, allowing the axles to leave the rear end...

Childs play for you I'll bet, you worked on these a long time ;) I'd say there's a few issues in there! Must have been the week for it. A guy and his gal rolled into our lot, thats conspicuously posted, had a similar failure but the axles stayed in, was an early 2000's dodge 2500. He ended up taking the driveshaft out and running 25 miles back home with a load of scrap metal on, using the transfer case and front axle. Not sure how that worked out for him, seen it done with K series '73-'87 style, but not so close to later ones early/mid 80's, somewhere along the line they changed those NP transfer cases, never thought they were as good as the gear driven ones in cast iron housings.

Hey Allan - need to watch those gears on the pass side - three of them look to be worn badly...Just my Opinion Rob.....

I knew someone was gonna mention that. :>)

I had just dropped the oil and it was still clinging to the cold iron. Those 'bad spots' were tiny air bubbles. Good eye tho.
