great plains drill

anyone ever use the older 3pt drills? mine is on a caddy for no till but im having a hell of a time to get it to put down the right population. just curious what settings you guys run yours on. I just bought it to play soybeans after always planting conventional. I like to plant about 80lbs to 85lbs an acre

I have a "solid stand 15" 24x7.5", I have planted wheat, and rye through it the last few years. The chart is there but doesn't correspond to the sprockets I have. I always "driveway plant" with it some to get the spacing right. Seeds per foot is more accurate than pounds per acre anyway.

What is the spacing on your drill? Mine is 10" and plant on 55. The bean size is 2700 seeds per pound. About 73# per acre.
175000 seeds per acre figuring 90% germination.

We used one for years, they are pain to calibrate. We would guess, plant an acre, fill it back up to see how many beans it took. Bean size changes calibration out the window. They plant good once you get it dialed in

I had one several years ago,it worked well. There are two drive settings with your sprocket set up. A slow and a fast. Be sure you are set up on the slow setting. This allows you to open your meter more and thus you have to move your population setting more to achieve your desired rate. This makes it not as touchy when you adjust it. As far as choosing your rate I always figured my pounds needed by the seeds per acre I wanted, divided by the seeds per pound to get the pounds per acre needed. Then just followed the chart insider the drill lid to see where the drill needed to be set for that many pounds. It usually came out pretty close. Hope this helps.
