this year's corn is in the ground

I finished planting our corn today. Only about 35 acres total, planted around 20 today. First I had to work it over a second time and didn't get out there until around 11.

Got the planter filled and going around 430, and with my 1600 pulling the 495 A planter I stayed out there until 11. I could've gotten done sooner, but I had to stop every so often to throw some rocks in the bucket (found a few golf balls for myself too) tomorrow is mother's day and I promised my wife it was all hers. Hopefully a little rain comes tomorrow like the forecast says. Of course not much has come yet from the forecast so we'll see what happens.

Don't count on it. I planted oats last weekend. When I started working the ground, it was too wet. While planting the dust was flying. Spent the week chisel plowing for corn, since it's been too wet until now to do any. Now with the extreme heat and desiccating wind, I'm holding off for a couple days to see if we get any moisture, before I start hammering the lumps down.
So, we went from too wet to too dry in a week.

We had Wednesday,Thursday and Friday without rain. Not that any of it amounts to much, just can't do anything. I just came in to put my coveralls in the dryer and wait it out a little more before I even finish chores.
I've got a good whack of ground for my picking corn chiseled, the silage corn ground was pretty much dry enough to get on Friday, but that's changed.
If I'm done by the end of May,I'll be surprised and happy. I don't even buy seed corn with a longer maturity than 95 day anymore. 90-92 if I can get it. The 1998 Farmers Almanac said we were in for 20 years of cold wet springs and so far they've been right. That way of thinking,we've only got three more to go.

I have the same problem but for the opposite reason, we have to use 85 day corn or lose too much yield to heat stress. I only plant chopping corn because I can buy grain screenings from a nearby port so cheap it would never pay to plant picking corn. Although a couple of years ago I did not get it chopped because of storms and had to get a guy to combine it and all he had was a grain platform, that was a fiasco but we got it up.

I got my oats in a week ago last Wednesday. I need to go check them I guess. I went back to hauling manure after I got them in like I usually do. I really don't care to get corn in much before Mothers Day anyway. For some reason we always used to think we needed to be done by May 10th,but I've planted enough corn in warm ground later in the month and had it pop up in just a few days to want to get out there planting in cold ground and having it crust over.
Two years ago,I finished planting silage corn June 23rd and it made silage alright. Made me a lot more laid back about the whole thing.

The last 2 years have been so miserable and late we jumped on the chance. I do agree that the ground is still a little cooler than I like but it was ready. One field had been so miserably chunky the last 2 years but we finally got it fall plowed last year and this year it was really really nice. Nice and soft, but firmed up well too. A little rain and it should come right up.
