International 766 starter

After having the starter rebuilt on the 766, my brother-in-law and myself made numerous attempts to get the tractor started. The gentleman that rebuilt the starter said that the 766 starter turns over in a different direction than the 966 we have. All the starter does is makes a grinding noise as it attempts to engage the flywheel. We tried no shims then shims with no luck. Is that true that 766 and 966 starters turn in different directions ??? Thanks for any help.

The starters mount from the back of the engine on both tractors and turn the same direction.

Moving the starter side-to-side on the engine would make no difference in rotation.

Starters typically rotate CW, and are mounted beside the engine on the left or right, with the DE facing rearward, the ones such as the OP is dealing with rotate CCW because they are mounted BEHIND the engine with the DE facing the front of the engine.

I put a turbo 414 in my 766 and used the 766 starter. I think whoever said the turn different directions are full of bull. I am sure the 766,966, and 1066 use the same starter.

The gear drive tractors use two different starters. They all use the same one up until a serial number break on each model when they all changed to a different number starter. The same holds true for the hydrostatic models. The Hydros use a larger starter than the gear drive models. The gas 766 has a smaller starter than the diesel starters.

Pull it out. Lay it on the ground. Hook jumper cables to it. Hook other ends to a good battery. If it doesn't spin up instantly and try to roll away it needs worked on.

check the number of teeth on the starter bendix against the original one that was removed, delco starters of that size can be fitted with different teeth numbers, I found that out the hard way, only way the starters would turn a different direction between the two tractor's is one that mounts to the front turns opposite of the ones that mount on the rear,it would be a slight chance of the wrong direction engaging with the flywheel because of the taper on the ring gear and bendix teeth if it did it would spin backwards

Mike is right, they all turn the same way, CCW ( counter clock wise) Gasoline or Diesel. According to info from a large aftermarket tractor parts suppliers website: IH tractors, Diesel 766, 806, 826, 856, 966, 1066, 1206, 1256, 1456, 1466, 1468, 1566, 1568, 2806, 2826, 2856 all use the same starter. Six cylinder gasoline engines use a smaller starter than is used in Diesels. All 06, 26, 56, and 766 gasoline engines use the same starter.

First of all, thanks to all who have replied. I have received good info and it was just one of those things where we could not believe that IH would have starters going different directions in the 766,966 series. Thanks again.
