Yeah its a little off topic but.. Was thrilled yesterday to hear the local "kid" Brandon Scherif from Denison Iowa that played ball on the same field my boys do is going to the Redskins! Best part of this is he is a good common sense kid that works hard and comes from a good family. He could have gone pro last year but wanted to make sure he completed his degree at Iowa. He is a real likeable guy, comes back and does interviews with the local radio station and is very personable and doesn't seem to let his success give him a big head. Hope he has a successful career!

Hope he makes good at it. But now we will have to listen to all the whiners rant about the stupid game.

That's awesome, he's in the big leagues now LOL ! With all that goes with it too. Some have no use for sports, my gripe is the big business side of it, not fond of any of that, but its success for him, you have a chance to do it, hard not to. Friend in high school, went to Syracuse, scored in the orange bowl inm '88, would have to look it up, but I was watching on TV rooting, getting old, memory fading LOL ! He was a natural multi talented athlete, football, basketball, baseball and track. I was on the football and track teams with him. Unbelievably gifted in all athletics and the best part about him was his attitude, he was a very mild mannered, humble, and not very outspoken, and as good a friend you could ask for, he was a person who made full use of abilities, and such a natural at running very fast, + he played baseball in the spring, so he did not go to track practice very often, but still won most, if not all the events he competed in. He would come back for visits, we enjoyed who he was as a person, it was great to see him succeed, he came from the projects, public housing, amongst a lot of negativity, adversity etc. Maybe the best thing was that although he made it through the NFL draft and was placed, he never made it to a full career, but one thing was certain, he gave it his best and to this day has no regrets about it from what he has said. He is very successful in his life regardless and likely because of who he became through dedicated perseverance in sports/athletic competition no matter the outcome, the experience built his good character. When we played football together, the coach literally built the offense around him, and that sure worked well, he never had a big ego or any ego, it was his raw talent that stood out.

Another classmate, made it to the NHL and was a well known goalie with the Mighty Ducks, neither ever lost their head, they just followed their dreams and made the best of their ability to be successful, that in itself is something to admire more than the rest of the glitz and glitter of professional sports.

Kudos to the IOWA boy. The thing about Brandon that I just loved, one HE IS A LINEMAN, and two "all the expert forecasters saying maybe, just maybe he would be picked late in the second round" Picked #5. So much for all the talking heads. gobble

Sounds similar to the tale of Chad Greenway from Mt. Vernon, SD. This will be his 15th season for the Vikings. Went to college at Iowa, graduated with very high GPA, down to earth, visits the area often as family is still on the farm. Has set up a foundation at an area hospital for kids with cancer (I think). Has led in tackles from his linebacker spot for several years, but never gets any hipe from the sports casters because he never gets into any kind of trouble. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Glad to see him make it to the NFL. Lets hope he doesn't let the money and fame go to his head and he continues to be a good guy.

If he is a lineman you won't catch alot of his play on TV cameras. The line is only shown breifly at the beginning of the play then cameras follow the ball. We had a local guy play on the Jets and then be released to the 49ers which is how I know this.

Look up #73 Baltimore Ravens. Iowa Farmboy from Anamosa Iowa! Also very down to earth. Grew up down the road from Marshal and now they are wispering he could get into Hall of Fame in next coupla years. Nice to see local boys making it!

I was tickled to see that, too. Brandon has been a mentor to Ike Boettger (No.75) for the last year. Ike is the nephew of our niece and her husband, so we're going to be watching him this fall.

Just pray he keeps his good common sense and the fame and money doesn't ruin him like it has so many others.
