There is a photo ad for some AC A tractors in Montana. Are they anything like the AC U? I've never heard of an AC A.

I don't know anything about the U,but a friend just a couple of miles south of me has an A. He usually has that one sitting out in the yard where it can be seen in the summer.
I don't know if it came from one of the Polk auctions or what. I know he has an Oliver 99 that came from there.

A's are the latest decendants and final versions of the old 20-35 and later E series wheatland/standard models. They have the big 400 to 500 cu. in. 4 cylinder engine of the E types married to the 1930's U type transmission and rear end gearing. This gives them "more modern speeds" and 4 gears instead of just 3 as the E models had. They still look almost identical to the E's until you notice the operator's platform is different as far as control locations and type of seat suspension. A's have a sort of "road gear" while the poor old E's were slower than sin because of their old growling semi-open pinion/bull gear type rear end final drive dating back to the original 1920's 18-30 and 29-35 tractors of which nearly all had steel wheels. These E and A models were the "Big Boys" of the Allis-Chalmers tractor line until after the WWII era.

I have an AC A pretty big ole beast comparable to the McCormick W9 and the L/LA Case. Its
very strong on the belt.I've owned 3, two including mine were bought by counties to do road work the 3rd was bought to run a sawmill.
