Made it out in the field today!

Think I'm about the first to start fieldwork in these parts.

Had a field that last year was used for septage disposal, and was disked regularly.
(Can you say rough? uneven? )
Got out on it with a 16 foot field cultivator and made two passes, diagonally.
Think one more pass east/west, and it'll be level and smooth enough to pick rocks and drill oats/alfalfa.
Was pretty wet on top when I started, we had 2 inches of rain last week. But a good breeze, and a sunny afternoon
took a lot of the wet out. Supposed to rain tonite. Can't win.

I've been thinking about getting on the oat ground. Had the drill out yesterday, greased it and fixed a clutch that needed attention. Kinda looks like even if it doesn't rain tonight,it probably will Thursday,so no sense getting excited.

yeah that's the trouble I n most parts round here ,, you can make it out in to the field ,, but durned if you can make it back in to the barn ,, lol

You may well beat me getting then planted. I will loose several days next week. Even if weather does cooperate. Took soil samples this morning. Will shoot them into the fertilizer dealer tomorrow. May take them a couple weeks to get processed. Fertilize last by broadcasting so I have a little leeway there. Got good results with their custom made last year, going to try it again.

I always liked to jump of early all my equipment was small and light and the neighbors were very easy excited. The best one was a year i went out and chopped stalks at night the ground was frozen and had a john deere 50 on the chopper the next day neighbor was really excited he took off and was going to show us how to farm he buried the tractor half way up the field. It was at least a couple weeks before it was fit

I can't even think about it until Friday at the earliest. Saw some ground that was worked along I-94 yesterday coming home from Chicago.

I had half of my trees in and going strong. These last couples days of rain stopped me. Waiting again for the clay to dry.

I will start digging til it dries a bit more. The tree spade goes in wet soil like butter.
Hope to be all done planting by next Sunday.

Rick

So did I except I was limited to being on foot -LOL.

Hand broadcasted some clover seed and KY31 in my pasture field. Rains tomorrow should beat the seeds into the ground in pretty good.

One neighbor chisel plowed some head lands. Was quite greasy. Another took a field cultivator out and worked a field down I'm assuming for oats. Don't think any seed is in the ground yet. South of ionia.

Some fieldwork was done here in my part of NWIA ten days ago but the rain put an end to it. Mostly anhydrous and leveling off fall ripped corn stalks. Only a fool would plant corn here with the soil temp as cold as it is. I think today is the first day to plant and have it covered by crop insurance. Or was it yesterday? We've had 2.25" rain in the past ten days.

Edit, just looked at the radar and there is a lot of red color followed by yellow headed this way so there won't be any fieldwork for a few more days.

1st patch of sweetcorn planted yesterday. About a week later than normal, but still should have some corn on the stand by June 25 here in southern Indiana. Planted 1/2 acre, with about 23 more 1/2 acre patches to go, planted every 3-5 days as weather permits.

I am sure I could go out into the field, but also positive i would not make it back out of the field. The good old blue clay is still way, way too wet, and not sure the frost is out yet, some areas certainly still seem like there is plenty of frost holding the moisture. Have a couple of big auctions next weekend, can't wait to see how many of us get stuck in the mudd as they both typically park everyone in the fields... not going to be pretty.

Pet peeve, ZTR- always wondering where folks are talking about. Actually faster to type "corn in ground in SW IL" or wherever, than "my area". At ease, rant over. LOL
