bush hog blades

Nick, there really is no need to remove the blades. I was thinking like you when I first got my tractor and brush cutter. Now I just raise mine up all the way on my 3 point hitch, put blocks under the mower so it can't fall on me if the lift looses pressure, and use a hand held grinder to sharpen the blades. Much easier, in my opinion. Good luck!

just use a angle grinder and sharpen them on the hog, block it up first! on most of them that big bolt that holds the blade on is a press fit, it wont just drop out when you remove the nut, it will come out, but your probably in for a fight to do it, the other thing is what are you using the brush hog on? for grass i sharpen the blades up like a lawn mower so it gives a smoother cut, but if your using it in brush and saplings, you want a less sharp edge in order to shatter the ends of the tree trunks ect and discourage regrowth, i have to cut both kinds of areas, and used to keep 2 sets of blades, which was a pain, i happened on to a used brush hog at a cheap price,so i got lucky and have 1 set up each way now

You will need at least a 3/4HP 8" grinder to really sharpen those blades, if you do...

I would suggest finding a good Finish mower for the grass..I like my Woods 372 (72") for most cutting if the stuff is less than 12" tall...maybe higher..

For pasture mowing, I like my Ford 6 1/2' Flail..I don't need to over-lap each pass and I get done faster..

A Flail consumes more HP in heavy debris but does a good job...

For really BIG stuff, I use the old Bush Hog (6')..

I DO like to drop the Bush Hog blades, so I can re-grease the pivots ( I always Grease the big bolts, so they come out easier next time )..
Mine came with a " Long Wrench-Socket to reach the Nuts...

so a fellow asks a question on sharpening his " bush hog " blades and first reply he gets tells him he should look at a finishing mower and blah blah blah ? sheesh! leave the blades on and get under with an angle grinder & clean up the faces don't really matter , bush hog basically smashes everything in it's path anyway

AGREED....!!!

Just added a couple comments, what is your problem with that..??

We TRY to be constructive in here, maybe have a laugh or two..NO need for Hate and Discontent...!!

Ron..

Thanks everyone I will just use an angle grinder but I will flip it up against a tee to check under it I want to get a finish mower but figured I should wait till I fix the lift on the tractor I will put it on

Going a little smaller "lawn tractor"I use a 41/4 angle grinder with a sander disk on it I use 120 sand disks and clamp the blades to a big out door bench. Then balance them with one of those wobble thingeys. Switch them out like every third mowing and that way they just need to be touched up. NICE clean cuts. Now up on the farm I used to take those two big honkin bolts out and sharpen them blades once a season. If you really hit something and take a chunk out you should weigh the blades with an accurate scale and match them up. No vibration. If you keep after them they are not too big of a trouble to resharpen. The big trouble is that most everyone beats the crap out of them and Theeeeeen!

(quoted from post at 07:10:42 04/11/15) Is there anything wrong with taking the blades off my bush hog and sharpening them on the belt sander?

I lift the b'hog up with the 3-point & block it up for safety then use a big c-clamp and a 4x4 or whatever between the top of the blade and underside of the mower deck to clamp the blade in a spot that's easy to get to with grinder. 8)

I sharpen mine while still on the machine. Takes just a few minutes. I use a Craftsman right angle grinder. Like others have said, block up the mower for safety.

I agree with the others. Do it on the machine. Raise it up and block it and go to work. If you don't have a big impact and wrenches you will invent several new cuss words before they come off.

hat is what I do. No laying, crawling, just stand up and grind away. :)
