Got a huge chip in my windshield today, almost dead center in my view area.

So I went to the volvo dealer in Knoxville to get a new one. I was surprised the windshield wasn't glued, just used a rubber seal like tractor windows.

Took longer to check in at the dealer and pay the bill than it took to change out the winshield. I was there a total of 31 minutes, but I waited about 3 minutes to leave so I could get my 30 minute break in. Only cost $235.00 too, a lot less than I expected.

We folks in Tennessee just believe it taking care of folks from up north. Have to keep that money coming south . LOL I would have figured $600.00 min

Does the road police ding you for chipped glass? I know here in Ca You can get a ticket for a cracked front window. I don't know about a chip in the glass. At least you are good to go now. Stan

they couldn't use there fancy glue epoxy stuff and fix the chip? We have had a few done in cars and pickups and unless you really knew where the chip was, you cant find it after.

back in the day they all had the rubber seal,..the glue in is part of the structure on the newer ones

I thought on trucks and busses the windshields were designed to pop out or at least be able to be pushed out in a crash to provide an escape exit.

Isn't it great to be able to see again? All those tiny pits add up especially when driving into the sun. I used to plan on replacing a windshield every year when I was running four trucks. One guy in particular would get as many dings as everyone else put together. Think maybe he was following a little close? LOL.

It was far too big for a repair. They say if you can cover it with a quarter they can fix them, but this one was twice that size.

Any chip in the wiper sweep area is an out of service ticket. I had 2 other small ones that I was going to get fixed, but this one was too big.

Chevy pickups and farm trucks in the '70s and '80s just set in a molding with no glue.

I had the windshield replaced in a 1980 Chevy pickup once by an old hand and a trainee. I timed them. With both working together, from the time they pulled the wiper arms 'til I signed the invoice was 7 minutes.

Drove school bus - the front and rear glass is in with just weatherstrip and designed to pop out if kicked. I never had to give it a try. Thank heavens.
