Al Capp was decades before his time

Well now you can keep track of what your tractor is doing while you are away. The 21st century answer to the The Dick Tracy (comic star) wrist radio is here. Apple has an ipod sort of thing in a watch according to Google News. My my. If he'd only known his imagination was so far ahead of it's time.

I'm not sure that Al Capp had anything to do with Dick Tracy, but he did have a character named Fearless Fosdick that was a parody of Dick Tracy.

My favorite series that Capp did was something that he called "Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everyhing (SWINE). That was during the student protest days of the 1960s and 1970s. Capp was a great political satirist.

Gubbmint would use technology to spy on it's own citizens?

Nah! That would never happen.

Move along, nothing to see here, move along...

Al Capp had a character that wuz called General Jubilation T. Cornpone.
Can any one guess what civil war general he based his cartoon character on?

Yeah, Al Capp did the "Lil' Abner" cartoon and Fearless Fosdick was his satirical version of Dick Tracy.

But yes, I think one of the fascinating aspects of my lifetime is all of the futuristic gizmos dreamed up by cartoonists and science fiction types of my childhood that have become reality or have been far surpassed.

Remember Lil' Abner, Daisy May, Moonbeam McSwine, the Sadie Hawkins day race, Kickapoo Joy Juice? Eagle Eye Fleegle and his single, double and triple whammy's? Was it Senator Bull Moose? He was Capps satirical version of TR and his Bull Moose Party? Remember Li' Abner's obsession for "po'k chops"? Any one remember the Lil' Abner movie? It was sort of a comedy/musical, if I remember correctly?

Yes, the government's henchmen are watching our digital moves, but so is ISIS and Russia and China and every other nation or entity we don't like. I feel more comfortable with our government watching us than I do the others. Do we want our government to quit watching us so the others can take over?

There are benefits to this modern technology. When my son is running the planter this spring I will be able to monitor the planter, the seed drop on every single row, speed, everything a planter does, and know where he is in the field with an Ipad from anywhere and call him if I see something I don't like. I can have an Ipad in the field cultivator tractor and if he calls me with a question about what's happening I can see what he's seeing from my tractor. Cool huh? Expensive, well, yes.

Nope' Early was a great general.
Jubliation T. Cornpone was based on the greatest confederate general the north ever had.

Read where since mid 90's all calls to certain countries outside the US were or could have been monitored by the folks somewhere upstairs. One country was Mexico, can't remember the others. Be careful if you call your senorita south of the border.

Yep, Capp had one of the most amazing cast of characters ever assembled, and he was ahead of his time in many ways. I read Li'l Abner every day; just wish I had been a little older and more astute to better comprehend the underlying satirical points he was making with his storylines.

Bullmoose was actually General Bullmoose, a composite figure representing major corporate power. Paraphrasing a statement actually made by the chairman of General Motors "What's good for General Motors is good for the country", General Bullmoose often proclaimed that what was good for Bullmoos was good for the country.

Remember the "Skonk Works", where the (can't remember name) boys did mysterious things and produced Skunk Oil? Lockheed engineers later adapted the name for some of their more exotic operations.

Ah, yes, the Skonk Works. I can't remember the names of the boys either. Wonder if anyone remembers the names of the two characters (moonshiners) who were always cooking up the Kickapoo Joy Juice? One was a barrel shaped scruffy looking feller and the other was a skinny dude. I can picture them in my mind, but cannot think of their names!

Aw shucks. Missed that one. Sure thought I remembered Al. Sorry for the disinformation. But anyway Dick was wayyyyy ahead of his
time. Where'd he get that squared off schnauzer?

I knew that but thought he did the DT gig also. Should have Googled the facts before I shot my mouth off. Oh well, it brought out some interesting comments about hillbillies.

I THOUGHT THAT THE SHMOOS WERE THE BEST (that's what happens when I type without watching)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
