Went to a funeral today. I have known the guy for 40 years but not really what you would call a good friend. His wife attends church where I do but he didn't. I am pretty active in church. I walk in to the service a few minutes before time to start and the funeral director starts giving me information about the order of the service. He handed me a program which I stuck in my pocket. Another guy had ridden with me and as we walked down the isle, I said; "I wonder what that was about", he said "The program says you are officiating." I been around a long time but that is the first time that ever happened. I sort of adlibbed through the service and tried to act normal. My wife was helping with the lunch for the family, which is customary. When I got her home I ask her if she knew anything about it. She said "Oh I though I told you that"? That is a "once in a lifetime experience" It will never happen again,I assure you. That is what the Minister gets paid for. At least he would have known ahead of time.

A couple years ago my uncle died, it was written in his last wishes that I speak some appropriate words at the funeral. The minister had charge but I felt very honored that I was asked to do so, even over his own children.

Sounds like you handled it well.

What did Paul tell Timothy... "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction."

I am working right now on an American Legion brothers service. He IS NOT departed. I am humbled and honored that he thought me worthy and able to do the task. Have been able to visit with him a couple times over the past week. I am under strict guide lines. not too long, don't make me something I was'nt, and only a little Bible lesson. I know where he's coming from and and its easy to comply. Now to just get the words and wording, the humorous and serious, the care and the love, gratitude for his Navy service all together. It will come. I could not do it COLD as you did. I'm sure you did a wonderful job. BTW I've had a few "I thought I told you" episodes. gobble

RANT......I had something somewhat close to that. A friend and the Ex biwitch vountered me and said nothing. Got there found out what was going on. Took both of them out side..TOLD off the "friend" and told him I NEVER wanted to see him again. Then told the ex that she had just made mistake number three. Things didn't last much longer. Also found out she cheated. To this day I just cannot understand why some people have to be so low down?

My sisters wanted me to speak at the memorial we had for our Dad at the American Legion post that he belonged to near his house. Dad was USAF in the early 50s. I thought I had it all worked out in my head what I wanted to say... I hit most of it, but was an emotional wreck and could hardly talk. My parents have been living in Florida for the past 30 some years and we haven't been able to get down to see them much. Luckily they wanted it to be short as others wanted to speak also. Very grateful to the Legion for the very solemn service and 21 gun salute.
