New Holland 1049 engine swap

Looking for alternative engines to replace my tired 361. I have 460s and a non turbo 7.3 I can get easily. Just wondering how the fit would be.

The 361 is a F E block engine and it has a STEEL crank . A 460 is a 385 block and a Nogular crank engine . The bell housing pattern are not the same . To mate up to what you have you will have to stay in the F E family 330- 428 . The F E engines with steel cranks are 331 , 361, 391 ,they are the HD engines . There are other things inside the engine that are different also over a car or pick up engine.

I have a Super 1049 that we've had since it was new in back in 1975! It has the 361 in it too and so far the old girl still runs fine. I"ve often wondered what I'd do if something happened to it in the middle of haying!! As those old engines are not that common anymore.

You may find this link interesting http://www.haytalk.com/forums/topic/18858-1069-nh-bale-wagon-cummins-conversion/ from Hay talk website where I guy removed his 460 and put in a 5.9 cummins.

I don't put no where near the miles on mine since I got a retriever truck but I still pick over 30,000 bales with it. Now all the balewagon has to do is pick the bales in the field and stack in field or say a mile drive to sheds. Any distance i just move the stacks with the other truck as my highway is so busy its scary driving down it with the old balewagon.
