Planting 60 arces of soybeans this year.Planting with a John deere 7000 no till planter set at 30 inch rows.Did this last year and not happy with yield. The soil is tested and up to high fert.Thinking about planting twice and having 15 inch rows.Good idea? I think I could push the yields.Any thoughts would be appreciated.Mike

The 7000 should plant beans just fine, but it can be harder to control the rate with the smaller beans.

What is the issue you had last year?

What is your geographic location? Lots of 80-100 bushel 30" soybeans cut here in the south in 2014. I disagree that 30" soybeans are a thing of the past. Here 15" beans are becoming a thing of the past as well as planting those outrageous high populations. Many guys are planting 140,000 beans/acre on 30's and making some record setting yields. How about your levels of micro nutrients? What's the pH? Calcium levels? Any chance you have a disease issue?

Plant 50#/acre on 38" rows on our acreage and yield within 1-2bu of adjoining BTO field split row.

I did that in 2013 with half the field. planted with JD 7200, yield was the same, I had the same pop. for both 30" (140,000) and 15" (set at 70,000 and turned around)

My best yields have always been with a drill, tried the 30" planter and 15" rows, took forever to get anything planted, and still not as good of yields as the drill!

Did it for years with white 5100 on 38inch rows. Cut population (170000) in half and drove on first planted rows. Never had a problem with emergence. Helps a lot with crop canopy keeping late season weeds in control. In our area, 15-20 inch rows add 2-3bushels to the acre. Good luck.

Maybe in your area but you can not find anyone using a drill around me anymore. My area is half 15 inch rows and half 30 inch rows with almost no yeild difference. Top bean yeild was 80bu in 30 inch rows last fall. The emergence is so much better with a planter and seeding rate even. A grain drill is little more than a controled spill when planting. Tom

Legumes can't handle sour soil, so assuming your PH is good, can you drill them? It's way faster and wastes less fuel than trying to double plant to get 15" rows. The beans will canopy faster helping to shield the soil plus it gives you better leaf exposure if you choose to spray foliar feed on them.
