new trailer over loaded at scale

i pick up my new gooseneck trailer and on the way home I stop to get a load of stone. I told the loader that I needed 5 tons, which is what the trailer was rated for. I pull on the scale got the green light to pull off and pull up to the window and pay. I started down the road and look at the ticket and it said 7.5 tons. Should I have gone back and empty some out. Got home and it very would dump it out the battery was smoking just to lift it up. What would you have done? Do you think it hurt the battery?

It would dump just as hard back at the pit as it was in your yard unless you were going to shovel it off. Sometimes it is touchy letting a hoist back down loaded. You sure don't want them to come down hard. I would have done the same thing that you did. It is hard to judge small loads in a large bucket of a large front end loader. As far as damage to the battery I would think that there would be a fuse or breaker in that line that would have triped if there was too much load for too long of a period.

The guy driving the loader can only guess as to how much he is loading so if your over loaded it is up to you to go back and have him take some off before you pull out.

You have to deduct the weight of the trailer from the 10000 pound load rating.

If the trailer is rated for 5 ton and it weighs 2.5 ton, then you can haul 2.5 ton.

I would have shoveled out some and saved the motor.

A trailer axel company exc. told me that for example a trailer is rated at 5 tons, it is safe to put aboot 25% more on without damage.
They rate them a little lower than what it can stand so people won't come back and sue them if they would over load them all the time.
I hope this is clear, difficult to explain in type what I mean.

We have a 15000 lb gooseneck that we routinely haul 300 bu corn on. 56 X 300 = 16800 lb. But I have a long set of jumper cables to help raise it at the elevator. If you are going to the bin and raising it just a little at a time no problem.

That much over loaded is begging for a bent axle. You should check them closely for damage.

It was the battery. I stop after about 2 feet and let it cool then another 2 feet and stop and cool I did this until it was all the way up.

As DavidG said, you have to deduct for the weight of the truck and trailer. You need to go over the scale and rare up before getting your load. The loaders have scales built in so the operator can tell within about 500 lbs. When you are hauling for a living and you are too heavy you go back and dump some off before leaving then get weighed up again. Some quarries won't let you out with an overload. One place that I haul out of, the computer won't print the ticket if it is too high. most places though, they don't care. If you want to drive it they will let it go. But if you get in an accident and you have a printed ticket for the load, you are in trouble.

sotxbill, I believe you are right. The people had the hot side just seating on the post and I did not tighten it when I got home. When it stops raining I will check it
tomarrow. thanks

If it would have been me I would of taken it back and made it legal. If you would have got caught it would have cost you several thousand dollars in a fine.

In 02 & 03 I worked at a quarry. The loader had a scale built into the hyd system. Digital display in the cab showed the weight.
