Trailer brakes

Magnets deffinately on the bottom with the wires coming out on the back side of the axle. If they are on top your axle is upside down or someone welded the attaching ring on wrong.

(quoted from post at 15:21:40 04/07/15) Mine are on the top. Dexter axles.

Magnet always goes on the bottom.
If yours are on the top you have some fixing to do.
As far as mixing up left and right look at the long actuating arm it has to be in front of the axle when properly installed.

Magnet on the bottom is preferable, on top still works fine though and won't hurt a thing......just make sure lhs and rhs don't get mixed up.

Not so. Except on one axle that I'm aware of the backing plate bolts are such that the backing plate can only go on one way, so if the magnets are on top the axle is upside down. That will mean that the axle crown is going the wrong way which can cause a lot of problems. The only axle setup that I'm aware of that the brakes can be turned over is on Dexter 3500 lb axles.
