When day or so topics are answered, how come there not put on the top of the forum? I am on the simple tractor forum for simplicity tractors and when someone answers an old topic, it gets put to the top of the forum vs being in the order it was received.

rkh- go to [Modern View] by selecting it in the upper right hand corner of your post.

[Modern View] puts newer posts on top.

Yes, modern view puts the newest replies at the top, even if the original post is several days old.

So why not just make the modern view the default... save is all the pita of selecting it for every individual sub forum and that keeps the 'Active' topics on top.

Lance, I totally agree but many seem to like the classic for reasons that escape me. Another thing that is a real asset is in modern view you can edit your post to add info you forgot the first time around or correct mis spells, but the big thing is bringing the post to the top, that is invaluable rather than search through 3 pages to look up a post u r interested.

People get rather uppity though about it, gess thats why there are both

Well... just an FYI for the admins then... The layout here is THE reason I dont visit and/or post here at YT very often... although Im active on several other tractor related sites... mostly garden tractor forums because I buy GTs for repair and sell them but I own a few full size tractors also, International hydro, a Cub Loboy, and an 8N.... and currently 13 garden tractors of various makes....

..... but I dont bother to search here for posts that may interest me, its just too much trouble IMO. This thread is a good example, even though its active it will soon be dumped from the first page even tho there will be several threads with no activity ahead of this one.

and BTW.... the amount of OT threads in the "Tractor Talk" forum is also something I dont care for.... just my opinion... dont need anyone gettin excited over it... but there really isnt much Tractor talk in here most days.... this thread included

We troglodytes love the classic forum because we can tell who is replying to whom. Modern is just a jumble. Bringing the thread back to the top after each reply may have some purpose, but precisely what it is escapes me. So there.

I am replying to rkh. After posting, I will go to modern and see if that is discernible there.

Modern view is OK if everyone is responding to the original post. But this board has turned into kind of a "coffee shop"- we have gotten familiar with each other's personalities, and sometimes we respond to one of the responders, not to the original poster. Classic view is the only way to keep track of those responses.

For example: Person A says something in a post. B makes a smart-aleck response to A's post. C makes a response to B, like "LOL, that's funny, right there." In classic, you can see who is responding to whom. In modern, its chronological, and you can't make any sense of it. On classic, you can tell that I'm responding to mEl with this post; on modern, you can't tell.

Also, it seems to me, modern view does not include all the posts sometimes (unless I'm missing something). Some posts seem right out of left field until you switch to classic to see that they are responses to posts that don't appear in modern view.

Kind of bizarre IMHO.

As far a the title 'Tractor Talk' - just think of it as 'People Who Are Interested in Tractors and Other Things Usually Associated With Tractors or People's Lives Who Are Interested in Tractors Talk'. But that might be a little verbose for a forum title.

I s'pose its whatever a person gets used to.... if I want to reply to a specific person I would either type his/her name or use the quote button in their post, but use a general reply button to reply to everyone reading the thread, here at YT there doesnt appear to be a general reply button in the modern view so I use the button in the last post.... doesnt mean Im directing my reply to anyone specific... its just easier than finding a post from the OP.... if that makes any sense at all.

What you call classic reminds me of DOS script from the 80s, didnt like it then, dont like it now.... what you call modern view is what most other forums have used for over 20 years and is pretty much considered the norm now... YT is like a time capsule... antique forum for antique tractors I s'pose.... but it might be detering alot of people from being more active. I took a few minutes to attempt to explain my thoughts... but many probably dont.

Different strokes for different folks. The way things line up in Classic is why I like it.
Maybe I'm just an old coot, only 75 yrs old. Not against change if the new way works better, but if change is just to be new, then prefer the old way.
If I want to read again, or reply to, a post that was made on Wednesday last week, it is easy to scroll down, click on page 2, page 3, etc until the date shows up.
As to editing or adding something that I forgot to add, click on preview, it shows how the reply will look. Often have to edit several times. If okay, click on submit. If mistake shows, click on return to form & make corrections, then preview again. If okay, hit submit.
If I discover that I forgot something, bring up my own reply, & reply to my own reply to original post. It will appear next to the reply.
Willie
p.s. returned to & edited my reply 3 times before hitting submit.

Unless I'm missing something photos are a lot easier to load & post on Modern view than Classic view. And the posting is easier also as one doesn't need to go through the step of "preview the reply" either on Modern.

Maybe it's your browser Lance. Once I go to "modern" it stays there no matter if I change forums. So if you bookmark the "modern it would be the "default" for you.

This is "YESTERDAY'S tractors. It is frequented by a lot of old codgers who treasure resisting change as one of their basic tenants of life. I along with many others switched to modern view but the vast majority stick with classic because it is vitally important to resist change.

I be an older Codger with info. Were I an old codger with bad unreliable worthless spiteful comments, I would probably use Modern view. Jim

(quoted from post at 07:26:53 04/07/15) For a bunch of guys that don't like Classic you all seem to be here on the Classic View.

I am on modern view right now. Haven't used classic for many years now.

Mike (WA) said it quite well. Neither format is better, only to the beholder.
I frequent this site to lurk and learn. "Modern" is my preference but I use "Classic" to translate these coffee-shop transcripts!

I don't get bothered by my confusion. YT discussion forums give me plenty of entertainment and value for the price I pay ($0). I'll keep coming back!

Please enlighten me how you know which VIEW one is posting on?

I post/view Modern 99 +% of the time but have zero idea about other members.

Ive never thought of re-saving the bookmark while in modern view... but if that works then thats the first thing members should have suggested to the OP.... although I dont believe he has returned.... probably cant find the thread in classic view.

At 57 I might be a youngster around here but Ive long forgotten how to navigate the "Classis" view some of you prefer, and I'd be willing to bet many new comers to YT wouldnt even bother trying to figure that out, they can and will simply find another tractor forum where they feel more welcome and comfortable, not like theres a shortage of options but it seems to defeat the purpose of having a forum unless of course you dont want newbies in your old school coffee shop.
