1030 project this weekend

Had hopes of putting my 1030 together this weekend. Things didn't go so well tho. The pistons were siezed in the sleeves and the sleeves were also stuck in the block. We tried everything to get them out. Couldn't get a puller on them because the pistons were there. We put a jack under the sleeves and jacked up the tractor for pressure and hit on both the pistons and sleeves but couldn't get them loose. Tried heating the sleeve and that popped it loose and moved an 1/8" then stopped. We worked all afternoon on friday and got 1 out. Worked all morning saturday and got another. For that one I used the plasma cutter and cut as much of the sides of the sleeves as posible then busted that out, then we could drive the piston out. After that we could drive the rest of the sleeve out the bottom of the block.

Here is a pic of what it looked like before.

After some thinkin and a couple second opinions we decided that taking the engine out and removing the crank so we could have better access was the thing to do. So we pulled the engine. Good thing too because when I pulled the front cover I found the timing gears had rusted badly. They would have failed quickly so it's good we cought it.

Getting the crank out was mo picnic either, the crank was turned so you couldn't get at the front and rear rod to get the bolts out. We eventually got enough movement to get the crank out of the journals so we could get the rod bolts out.

Then it was just hammering away til we got the sleeves and pistons out. We used a 1" shaft and 20 lb mall. The rust between the piston and sleeve had swelled the sleeve so there was no way the sleeves would move til the pistons were out. Most of the pistons just busted apart before letting loose. Once they were out we could drive the sleeves out, but they were still tight. We did get done just before dark tho. We also found that one lobe on the camshaft was rusted as well and the clutch was not too good either. So now it's on hold again til I can get a camshaft and timing gears and clutch.

My favorite youngest son Nick was there to help and I'm very glad too. I wouldn't have been able to do it myself. Can you tell from the pic where he was wiping his hands all day? Lol.

I kept telling him to use wrags, but every time I looked he was using his coat. He decided that after the last 2 days if your day is so bad that even Murphy is feeling sorry for you you could be living under Jon's law, it's just like Murphy's law only worse.

Jon can you rebuilt that motor for a reasonable price??? I have seen complete running Case 1030s for under $2500. It does not take long to get that in parts anymore. Would a donor running motor be cheaper??? I am just asking as I am not familiar with Case parts pricing.

It does look like you had fun getting the sleeves out. Have you tried welding a bead long ways in the sleeve??? I do that pretty regularly. You would still have had to get the pistons out but then it goes easier.

Well cost effective went out the window long ago. Lol. I bought this as a basket case and only had about 300.00 in it sitting in my driveway after all the trading was done. The heads got way more expensive than I was hoping since all 3 were cracked. I knew one was bad, but hoped the others were good. They were able to fix one, but with rebuilding and replacing the other 2 I have about $1100.00 just in head work. Add $1200.00 for the engine kit and now the cost of the camshaft and gears and clutch. By the time I'm all done, with tires and paint I'll have about what a nice restored one is worth in my area in it. This is more about the trip than the destination anyway. I just wanted a 1030 and a project to do with my boys. At this point I'm determined to bring it back to life pretty much reguardless of the cost. I will say that at least near me you won't touch a 9/1030 that runs for $2500.00, most are $4-6,000.00 with poor tires.

Hi Jon I really feel sorry on the cost so far of what you had to spent on this tractor but I remember telling you I had two heads ready to drop on the engine but since you were a little far apart cosdt of shipping might be an issue but now I see you really got worse than what I could have sold them to you. I do have good used clutch and timing gear if ever interested. my e mail is [email protected]

Wow Jon, I hope can get it up and running, that's to bad you had so many problems. I guess that's some of the fun with old iron!
