Farmall Rear Wheels wont turn-help!

I need help on my newly acquired Farmall A with a super C motor. The back wheels are stuck. I brought the tractor home, had my son to hook up and pull me (sitting) on the Farmall off of the trailer. "she no go" as my son pulled I sat still and he was pulling me, my trailer and truck (hooked up). Finally we got it off of the trailer, started pulling the tractor around. Slowly the wheels began to move a little (transmission in neutral, clutch pedal held down). It appeared that one wheel was trying to go one way and the other wheel go the opposite way. After about 30 minutes the wheels loosened up quite a bit, but not completely. I got tired, wore out and asked my son to come back later and we'd try it again in a day or two. I have no idea what is wrong so I'm depending on your expertise here. ALL OPINIONS AND INFORMATION IS APPRECIATED. By the way the brake pedals don't act quite right, they just move a tiny bit.
Thanks to all in advance!

Probably stuck in 2 gears at once. If the transmission is "locked up" (2 gears at once prevent it from turning) the rear tires will turn opposite directions (it is what a differential does). The trans can be put back to normal by removing the top cover and, using a big screw driver, slide the shift rail slots back into the center (neutral). The tip of the shifter (looks like a ball) needs to be rebuilt to avoid the problem. Welding it up, and grinding, polishing will make it work. Jim

appears like the brakes are seized, quite common problem on tractors that sit around. more so with the disc brakes. lots of times just loosening the drum will get you moving.

NEVER good to try pulling a tractor when it has a problem like that till you know what the problem is because you can break things doing that. One wheel turning one way and the other turning the other way say to me that it is likely to be stuck in 2 gears in the transmission and you are lucky if you did not hurt something. I'd pull the transmission cover/shifter plate off and have a look see. If it will start you can test my theory by starting it holding the clutch down then slowly let up on the clutch with the shifter in neutral and see if the engine stalls. If it stalls it is locked in 2 gears

If the tires are turning (even in opposition) the brakes are free. Not being rude, I know you know this. Jim

If one wheel is turning one direction and the other in another direction with the clutch pushed in the transmission is stuck in two gears at the same time when the gear shift lever seems to be in neutral. Pull the top cover off the transmission and line up the slots in the three shift rails and they will most likely let the wheels turn.

There are three parts to a differential/transmission. Left axle, right axle, input shaft. Two of these always have to turn. Like when you get stuck in the mud one wheel will spin and the other won't so the spinning wheel and the input shaft are turning. When the input shaft to the differential does not turn the left and right wheel will turn opposite directions when one of the two wheels are rotated.

The transmission being stuck in two gears will prevent the differential input shaft from turning thus causing the problem you have described.

It could be the engine is stuck, and the clutch is stuck to the flywheel, that would cause the problem you're having too.

Harold, I am in balmy Florida, be glad to send you plenty of sunshine. Actually a little too hot for me here!

John, can I take off the transmission cover and move the gearing there?
Since you said that, during the towing process I put it in 4th gear, no problem, reverse no problem, 3rd gear no problem, but could not put the transmission into 1st or 2nd gear.

Old, Thanks, I do believe that this may be my problem course I need to hear all the answers that I can get to help me know more. Thanks for the tip on towing, this 72+ year olds "sitter" is sore as can be from being bounced on that metal seat. "What a sight it was" hilarious I tell you!
walt PS the part fit perfect!

Jim, thanks for the info, I can use that as a guide along with the other comments to orient me as to what to do.

Rustred, that was one of my first thoughts since the pedals don't act exactly normal. I guess that's another problem though.

Cole, that was present in my mind as I scratched my head wondering "what can be my problem".

8nsyes yes you can take out the 6 bolts I believe that's how many and pull the top cover off and slide the shift rails so all the slots are inline. There will be 3 shift rails. Since you said you can't put it in 1st or 2nd the shift rails are not inline. If you don't put the shift lever in any gear I bet you can pull the tractor and the wheels will roll freely with the clutch pushed in and if you let the clutch pedal out while in tow the engine would turn over if it's not stuck.

Even though if it's stuck in gear 1st or 2nd you should not be able to put it in any other gear so you have a spring and ball detent that's not working between the shift rails.

I tried to google a good picture of shift rails but couldn't find any.

What is the condition of the engine? You may have multiple problems:

1. It's stuck in 1st or 2nd gear. Solution is the same as previously mentioned.
2. The engine is stuck and the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel.

Shoot you should have seen us trying to back in a 656 that has a bad ring/pinion gear into the shop using a chain hoist then the 841 Ford to push it

About 8 years ago my John Deere M was the first tractor taken to the farm I bought out of state. At that time I was still working in Wisconsin and last used this tractor in September. It was parked in the Quonset over winter and upon trying to move it in late May the next year it would just pull the tractor down when letting out the clutch. It didn't matter if it was in gear or neutral. I took it to a repair shop and found it had 3 bearings in the transmission frozen up just by sitting over winter. It could be moved by hand, without much effort,to load on my small trailer.

Retired Farmer, here's a bit of info. I talked with the owner of the equipment auction one day prior to the Auction. Asked him if this particular tractor ran. He told me that it ran (need to be jumped off) and that he had just drove it to it's spot for the sale. After the sale, all monies paid, I get my truck and trailer ready to load my Farmall. I asked the yard man from the auction to give me a battery boost so I could load said tractor. He told me, "buddy that tractor wont start" he tried the booster, sure enough nothing happened. Another Auction yard worker came over and told us that he had to put the tractor there with chains and a forklift. So I asked the first fellow to load the Farmall onto my trailer using the same method, he did, I came home knowing that I had a peck of problems. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!

mkirch;
I don't know the condition of the engine at this time. However, from information received from this forum, I put ATF in each spark plug hole, let it sit a few days. I noticed that the plugs were new, other new parts are on the motor. I took the starter off and checked it out, fine condition, tested out well. It appears that many new parts were put on the motor and it does not appear to have been started the first time. SO, as I get one thing done I will go to another and find out what awaits me. All you guys and gals on this forum are an absolute blessing to such as me. Thanks for all!

John;
Thanks for trying to find me a picture of the ball/detent, that would be a great help to me, if I see I can do, if I read usually I have problems grasping the concepts.
Thanks,
walt

Hello;
I'm at Wauchula, Florida, about 44 miles south of Lakeland. I may possibly be at our cabin in Kentucky on the 11th.

yes this is true. but he was saying rear wheels stuck and no go. then after pulling it around it loosened up.???
I bought a super w6 last summer on auction. it was in a shed for about 20 years sunk up to the rims in mud. they just drug it out and back wheel just made big ruts cause rear wheels wouldnt turn . got it for 500.00 as you could see by the ruts it had a problem. went next day and changed oil and checked for spark and put gas in and it stated with starter.
then I loosened the brake drums off and just give it lightly forward and back a few times and she broke loose. drove it home 12 miles.

Yep. My vote is for the transmission being stuck in 2 gears at once. The only other thing that pops into mind is the possibility of having a pinion bearing, carrier bearing, or transmission shaft bearing frozen.
