OT: Combine Power Steering Repair

I have the steering pump (the one in the cab that the wheel bolts to) out of our JD 4420 combine to fix the leaky seals on the shaft. I have the dust cover seal off and the snap ring off, but I am not sure how to get the brass washer and inner seal off the shaft. Since I have the snap ring off, should I pressurize the oil fittings with compressed air to blow the seal loose? Attached are a couple of pictures. I believe it is a Ross pump, it has P07001 stamped on one flange. Thanks for any help!

I had to get one similar to that out of a steering hydra motor. I worked two good Snap-on o-ring picks down through the rubber part, turned them, the worked the seal up and out with them.

Thanks Randy, but I wasn't real clear in my explanation. The pictures show the pump before I did anything, but now with the dust shield and snap ring off, the next thing to come up and off is the brass washer (probably 3/16" down in the housing). Then there is another rubber seal below that. There isn't clearance to get a pick between the shaft and the brass washer.

Grab your air gun and blow air DOWN against the brass washer and see and see what pops UP.

Might want to spray a little penetrating oil down there and wiggle the washer around with a pick first.

Then, use a small-diameter self-tapping screw driven into the sell and a ViseGrip to pull it out.

The way I did it on truck Ross boxes input shaft seals, was to cap the outlet fitting, after removing the snap ring, and starting and instantly shutting off the engine. You have to cover the seal with a rag.So maybe the air pressure idea would work. Also you could try drilling a very small hole in the metal part of the seal, screw in a small sheet metal screw, and pry it out .YOU MUST be careful not to mar the shaft or the bore with the screw.Mark

Thank You for posting that portion of the manual, Bob! I have it all apart now. Interestingly enough, our local John Deere dealer said the seal kit was no longer available, but I found that IH used the same pump in a few applications, and our local IH dealer had the kit right on the shelf!

I appreciate your help!
