Compact Utility Tractors

You don't know what you are buying new and where they are being built anymore, other than a name. The other day I was at a New Holland Dealership, and the Salesman is pushing Mahindra tractors at me. Depending what size you are looking at, some are made in Japan, some in India, and some in South Korea. Really? So what exactly are you buying?

I'm gonna GUESS FIAT and DEERE production is split amongst some of the same places. So what'cha gonna do about it?

With the exception of gray market and Chinese tractors, I think it's pretty much a toss up these days.

Go with the best dealer in terms of experience, reputation and distance.

JD hasn't built their own sub-100 horsepower tractors in years.

I'll stick with my Yanmar-Deere 750. Very little plastic and no electronics. I can fix anything on it myself. I've had it since it was new in 1988 and the only thing I've had to fix is the alternator and rectifier/regulator. Everything else was normal wear.

The new holland . Just wait till mahindra disappears and there is no way to get any parts period everybody thinks somehow these foriegn machines will have the same parts support as the old equipment made buy Or supported by US companies guess what the wont Ive got some old equipment that you can't buy any parts for all foreign owned companies I guess new holland Is owned buy fiat but I bet fiat won't own em for long as they trying to sell CNh .

THe only tractors John Deere doesn't build is the yanmar tractors . The others under 100 are made buy John Deere but maybe not in the us as they have factories all over the world some countries will not allow a company to sell a tractor unless it was built in a factory in that country .

None of the compacts are made in the us. The international was made buy mitsubishi and the ford buy shibaura Massey and agco buy Iseki . John Deere yanmar .

"global economy" simply means that we send our money and jobs to other countries that will work cheaper, pollute their own air, water, and ground, and save us CHEAPSKATES a few dollars. For many years I have said "buy American - the job you save may be YOUR OWN!!!"

A neighbor of mine bought a Mahindra last year.I aint impressed. It's been in the shop 3 times.Nothing serious, just sh$t that shouldn't have happened.Safety switch once and loader issues twice.

Someone said they'd buy a New Holland over a Mihindra even though they're priced higher. If your gonna do that then buy an LS.They're them same tractor same color and a whole bunch cheaper.

I was at a show last year.Every brand was on site.Walked up to a New Holland dealer that also sold Kioti and asked if I was gonna buy a 55 hp tractor what do you suggest. The answer I got was anything painted orange.

My 1994 ford 1720 was built in Japan, all metal. It's been a great well built tractor.

Buying a new tractor is like buying a new car. Select a dealer close, that you know and trust, because some time you will need service and parts.
After two used Kubota's I purchased a new 2006 B3030 Kubota. Now it has 763 hours, and I am still a happy owner.
Only two complaints: #1: the rear wheels are too close to the inside of the fenders to run tire chains. ( but they do offer a wheel extension kit for $365.00.
#2: The turning brakes are difficult to use for turning as your right foot is also used for the forward speed control. (Need two right feet to operate)to over come this obstacle the designers added a forward travel hand control lever.

A tractor is a tool, right? We all know we get what we pay for when it comes to tools and trying to get a job done.

(quoted from post at 14:56:17 03/22/15) Go check out a Kubota. You know where they are all made.

Kubota makes everything it sells. My dealer says he can get any part for any Kubota ever made. You may not like the price, but they stand behind their product. I've had one for 6 years, no problems at all.

Our 01 JD 4600 has a Yanmar engine but I think some of the other components are made here, I think I saw Spicer on the front axle. (mfwd) We have had zero problems in 13 years and about 750 hrs.

I bought a 2008 JD 4320 compact made in the state of Georgia USA. Not a yanmar. Dad's 99 model JD 870 compact has yanmar written all over it.

I never understood why Deere reused model numbers like 4320, or say 4520 on compacts. I have a '70 4520 that I bought used from the Deere dealer by me about a decade ago. It was setting out on the lot for sale while I was there picking up parts. I asked about it, how much. It needed work. The fella said something upper '20's or lower 30's, I don't recall. I asked him if he was serious, so he put on his coat and said lets go look. We walked out the door and I headed to towards the 4520, and he headed off another direction, so I turned and followed him. He got to two new compacts with cabs and stuff, repeated the price and told me to look them over. I asked what they were and he said "4520's". They did say 4520 on them, and they were new and fancy, but they weren't 4520's at all. I pointed across the lot to THE 4520 and asked how much. Because it had new batteries in it, $5,000. We went inside, I wrote him a check, took it home that day.

It's all about the money. Stuff is built cheap overseas and sold here for big profits. Main street works for it, and Wall street enjoys the good life.

Mahindra is one of the oldest and is the largest selling tractor maker in the world, founded in 1945 and engaged in 18 different industries. Didn't they buy a car company in the G.B. from Ford? So where are they going? They will likely only get bigger in the U.S. when their value proposition is better known and the dealer network is wider. They already assemble and stock parts at several sites in the U.S. Several of the Japanese and Korean makers have been making machines for their local markets since the late 40s. Where would you suggest getting a sub compact tractor that is made in the U.S.? I'll answer for you... no where. The so called U.S. makers have been buying and rebranding them from the Japanese and Koreans for years. My little Mahindra was made in S. Korea by TYM (in business for over 60 yrs.) and the engine by Daedong (make the Kioti brand in the U.S. in business since 1947). These and Kubota saw a market that was not being served here and filled the demand. I see no problem with that.

I heard they will not get parts for gray market tractors. True?

Yeah, drives me nuts. About every time I go to a JD dealer for parts for my 420, Some guy gets a puzzled look on his face and says he doesn't see anything like that in the parts pics.

Nooooooooooooo, the 420 TRACTOR, not the lawn mower.

"Isn't the 420 lawn mower a tractor?"

Nooooooooooo, not really.

"Oh, didn't know they made a 420 TRACTOR".

Well, they do, ya want me to show you where the parts book is???

"Parts book? Whuuut?"

I can show you where they keep the old NH parts books and the one for the S-717 with the serial number for the one I owned wrote on the inside cover too, if you want.
