Manual says to use SAE 90w gear/mineral oil.. need 1 QT,but cant seem to find it anywhere...napa can order 1-gallon and they also said do not use regular gear lube....anybody know where I can buy a quart of this oil? It's for the stearing gear box....no power stearing on this model.

Any 90W GL-5, 85W-90, 85W-140, etc. , readily available just about anywhere, e.g., Wal Mart, will be fine.

Myself, I prefer CNH pourable, high EP lube. Such is available in one quart bottles from CNH.

I was going to use 80w90 gear oil....but the owmer of our local napa store...said 80w90 has additives that could damage seals and metals in gearbox. I know the fluid was changed a long time ago (at least 15 years) and should be done again. This has been a very good tractor for us since new in 1966....6000 hrs,and never been apart..z145 engine, just keeps going.

I always put corn head grease in my manual steering gear boxes. It doesn't leak with questionable seals. Don't know where to get what you are looking for, but can't imagine regular 90 weight hurting anything.

I found a quart of harvest king 90w...at rural king yesterday,GL5...but nothing said about mineral....then I went to a big autopart store...the woman working said, I've been here 15 years and never heard of such oil in my life.....lol I should have known not to even ask at that place lol.

Ford/Ferguson recomended 90W GL-1, so-called "straight mineral oil" in the transmission/hydraulic/differential sump of the 9N tractor when it was designed in the 1930s due to the brass/bronze parts in the hydraulic pump.

Both Ford and MF continued to recommend 90W GL-1 oil in the sump of 9/2/8Ns and similar MF models with the pump in the sump for many years thereafter but no longer do.

GL-1 90W (mineral oil) is still available but few stores stock it these days and I doubt if it is available in quarts.

Oils have improved enormously since the 1930s. I use the CNH pourable, high EP oil in steering boxes and rotary cutter gearboxes that are prone to leak but any good GL-5 90W, 85W90, 85W140, etc., will be fine in your steering box.

If you insist on GL-1, buy a 5 gallon pail and you will have enough for your self and all of your friends and neighbors for the rest of your lives.

Any TSC store has it in two gallon jugs for $17.00 and some change. It says Ford tractor mineral oil for older hydraulic systems.
