alfalfa questions

Anybody growing it in my area? NW AR, SW MO, NE OK. My dad said he grew some back in the 70's, and it only lasted one year. The seed rep said about the same thing. He also said that he only had one variety suitable for the area. I don't know anyone growing it locally, but the extension bulletin said it can be done, and that it should last 5 to 7 years. What gives?

(quoted from post at 23:46:48 03/18/15) I have seen it last 10 years. Most stands are 3-5 years and then broken up and planted back to other crops for at least a year. 1/4 - 1/2 section fields are not uncommon both dryland and irrigated.

I planted Roundup ready alfalfa about 7 years ago (I think). Ironic, because I have never even sprayed it. The stand is still as good as it was back then. It's only about a four acre patch. I find that it is like brome hay. If you plant more than you may ever need suddenly you are delivering hay for not enough money, waiting on people to show up at 2:00, and they are 45 minutes late before they call and tell you they can't make it because their sister-in-law needed a ride to the airport.

Anyway, alfalfa needs moisture but well drained soil. I have another pasture that I would like to use next but I don't think it drains well enough.

I just planted my 8 year old stand into beans. Neighbor planted his 10 year ols stand into winter wheat last fall.
