656 gas engine

I'm in the process of repairing a 656 gas engine and had the valves reground. Now, installing the valves I can't remember if it's the exhaust or intake valve guides that have the stem seals with "circlip" type bands on them. There are 6 of these seals and 12 of the seals without bands included in the gasket set. The parts schematic shows the two part numbers, but doesn't show a picture of them. There aren't parts numbers on the packages holding the seals either. DARN IT!!

Most likely, the tighter-fitted seals (with the spring bands) go on the intake valves.

Is there a difference in the I.D. of the large end of the seals and the OD of the guides which would make it more obvious where they go?

thanks guys. I thought they went on the intakes but just couldn't remember for sure. Really appreciate your help

As a general rule, the better seals will go on the intakes. When the engine is running, the intakes are under some vacuum when open while the exhausts are under some pressure. That makes the intakes have a tendency to draw in oil from the head while the exhausts will not.
