rolling yard

Wondering when is a good time to roll a yard? I think about this every summer when mowing my mom's yard. It is so rough that the push mower bounces all over, especially once the ground dries.

As soon as you can do it without making ruts or scars. The only way you can hurt the grass is by making ruts if it's too soft. I roll mine with a roller made from a 500 gallon anhydrous tank full of water so it takes a 30 HP tractor with good traction at least. Can't do it yet here in NWIA but hopefully in a week it can work. Walk around on the lawn and if there are any mushy spots you'd be better off waiting a couple of days.

You can roll a yard as soon and you are not making it rougher pushing or pulling a roller. The last few years I have been pulling a disc with a cultipacker behind as soon as the tractor tire stops making lug tracks. I run over the yard at least twice or more.

Best time to roll is in spring after it thaws. I usually want a good rain too. My roller is 5 ft wide and I can adjust total weight to 7000#. Usually do it with at least 1000#/ft = 5000#. That can roll water out of clay.

If I don't roll mine within a couple of days of the frost leaving, it's a waste of time. Usually the roller (42" wide and 300#) will show some dampness on it. If the tractor (B-7100 Kubota) is leaving tracks, it is too wet.

I recently rolled the lawn with a 4-ft roller weighing about 400 lbs. Seemed to do a fair job. Of course it doesn't mash down the thick clumps of grass, but does take care of those small, fresh "hills" of dirt. Used a 13hp Wheelhorse lawn tractor with chains on. Wouldn't have made the slopes otherwise. I think if a guy did this once a year every year, the lawn might become pretty decent.
