How long do your batteries last???

Went to move the farmall H today and sure enough... Dead... I put a brand new 6 volt battery in it when I bought it in 2010... Rebuilt the generator and fixed some wiring and since then it has always started and charged the battery good. I've never touched it. It runs so well that all the starter has to do is turn it over once and it starts. Today it barley turned an inch...Tested the battery and it was showing 4.3 volts and it won't take a charge so I guess it's done. How long do you guys usually get out of your 6 volts?

If U get 4 to 5 years out of a 6 volt battery I think you're doing very good but remember, a crank never goes dead.

Usually 6 - 8 years.

Failure to charge every 4 - 6 weeks during the off season will significantly shorten the life.

It is true that a crank never goes dead BUT they have been known to do bodily harm to you such as broken arms etc. Hang that crank on a nail in your shed to display as an antique and buy a new battery, use jumper cables, or wrap a chain around it and pull start it! Armand

I try to charge mine periodically as well. If I'm not using the tractor in the winter, I put the battery in the garage.

I use battery maintainers, best one I've found is shumacher.
Wallmart sells them $19.95. 6 or 12 volt. Makes your battery's
last a lot longer.

All of our equipment set for a little over 3 months, no maintainers, and they seem fine. Charged them all when we got home. I have heard horror stories about some maintainers starting fires. 9 12 volt, the Farmall C is the only 6 volt. It's in a shed that has no power, I will start it with the crank if necessary.

I try to follow all the good advice here about keeping batteries up,, most the time I get3 or more yrs , if I am lucky 5 to 7 yrs in a crown vic, Got 8 yrs out of 2 that come new with cummins diesel dodge ....but, cant keep batteries in the 4020 deer , lucky to get 2 yrs ,, sameluck with any 6 volt or 8 volt ,, they just wont last ,.. if ya run over them with a tractor tire and bush hog or split one with a disc ,, They wont Last Either , No Matter If ITS BRAND SPANKIN NEW ... Guess how I know

I Will agree with you till the cows come home!!! one of the best $30.oo bucks I have ever spent. Might just fix you battery if you didn't freeze the plates. GET one and try it!!!!!
Today in wallyworld I was picking up a gallon of anti freeze and a guy, wife, and a kid were coming down the isle. Asked if he had a good charger? No my old one died. Gave him about a thirty second lo down on what this unit does. Six or twelve automatic. If you hook up wrong it goes red. Charges at 1.5 amp. Turns off when done and goes into a standby mode. Desulfates the plates by slow up down charge and helps fix some batterys. They had it in their cart at the check out line and said thanks again! YEA

TRY an Interstate Optima 6 volt battery. Like $150.oo bucks but I know two people with a couple of Model "A" cars and the other a 42 chevey military dump truck. BOTH use these and just love them to death. Tons of brass Ba--ls if you get my drift.

On my 300u,with 7500hrs,still 6v, I've been getting 6 or 7 yrs.I put my charger on periodically-maybe 3x a year, mostly when I think it is low from either short run times or just sitting too long.Mark

Been a lot of years since I have ran my 6 volt tractors. But back a few years we had a JD440 crawler and the best I could hope for was 3 years out of one. I could pull it out of that and put in something easier starting like a model B or H and get a few more years from them. I don't think 6 volt batteries are built very good. I always seem to get one that weeps fluid and then eats up the battery box. I have had much better luck from 12 volt batteries. Now the Optima 6 volt is being built that may be the way to go but I think you can buy about 3 6 v from TSC for the price of 1 optima.

Wish I could remember the name brand of the
battery I bought at the local Co-op back about
2000. IT is a big six volt, really a diesel
battery, and I have only used it on the Cockshutt
40. No special treatment as far as charging or
removal. It still starts fine cold but hot starts
are pretty weak. Got a pair of 14 year old CIH
batteries on the Magnum tractor and a pair of
"Workaholics?" on a CIH combine that are also 14
years old and worked fine last fall. Will see how
they start this spring I guess.

Usually 4 to 5 on a 6 volt. I found that about 1
ounce of hydrogen peroxide per cell per year
extends all my batteries lives. I currently
maintain 39 batteries in vehicles and equipment.
