OT: automatic car s/w updates

Heard the local automotive commentator on the radio this AM in Detroit state that "cars will soon perform their own recalls and fix themselves".

Huh?

Turns out that they're talking about automatic updates to car s/w when there is a recall or TSB. You won't even know they're doing it.

Just imagine: When you parked your car at nite, it was running fine. Next morning, an update has occurred and it may not run or act the same as it did the day before. Yeah, that'll work.

Yep them computers are every where just wait till one crashes when driving and you crash try to explain that to the insurance guy!
Ypop
PS yes I am using said computer to write this LOL

We have that problem with factory automation. IT will push an update down at night, and a software package that is not compatible will not function the next morning when the crew starts work.

And notice now Microsoft wants to "lease" yo software instead of
buying it? How long before that spills over to the auto industry
where a monthly payment to the manufacturer is expected for you
to continue to have the privilege of driving the car you bought?
How long before you go to get into your car and it won't run
because you haven't bought the appropriate amount of
rustproofing, fabric protection, overpriced oils changes,
transmission ans cooling system flushes? Or the just turned it
off so you'll have to pay them $100 for the tow and $300 to hook
it up to the computer. How many car dealers out there would turn
your car off so they could force you to buy a new car AND buy
your trade a next to nothing because it doesn't run. Or big
brother turns your car off because they feel you owe them money
or that you haven't "paid your fair share"

Folks we've given entirely too much power to people who do not
have or best interests or even our rights in their minds.

The onboard computers are already storing where you've been, speed, braking and maneuvers. But will the computer fess up if it malfunctions and causes an accident? I wonder.

In a few years ISIS will be downloading viruses to our cars telling them at a specific date and time in the future to accelerate and turn left during rush hour, killing more Americans than died on 9/11.

What do you do if you need a part on it right away? If I had a car like that I would try to disable that part of it. It probably would come with kick down feature like larger trucks and you would have to limp to the dealer.

My daughter is a junior at a local state university majoring in computer science and has a (good paying!) part time job designing web sites. When she came home at Christmas she was telling me that she couldn't wait for the "Google Car" to be nationwide. For those of you who don't know, the Google car is a car on autopilot controlled by software and the GPS system.
I got a few seconds of silence when I asked her what would happen if a virus got into the entire system and made each car suddenly turn to the left? She told me that she hadn't thought of that before.

Same here. We supply test systems to companies with application s/w on PC's. We get emails/calls all the time that "the system is down" with a screenshot of some error. Usually turns out the customer updated drivers or something. Funny thing is that I got a call yesterday from a major automotive customer that one of 3 identical systems we sold them has been down since December. It's located in Mexico. The other 2 (in the states) are running fine. They expected us to help them RIGHT NOW!??!!!. (Turns out someone down there deleted a program.) But it's been DOWN since last DECEMBER???? What's been going on since then?

Guy gets a text from his wife, "Windows frozen, what to I do?" Guy texts back, "Pour hot water along the edges." A few minutes later wife texts back, "Computer won't work at all now.".........
