Have a 1963 John Deere 1010. The steering went. Took it in to have it repaired and was told the tractor was too old to fix. It's the worm gear in the steering box. Any suggestions. Does any one have the part? I am researching this for a friend. This board has been so helpful to us with our two tractos.

Not personally knowledgeable on JD's, but unless a 1010 is something extremely rare, there will be sources for the gear.

Someone down in the JD forum will probably have a solution. You can also have a gear made by a custom gear manufacturer.

'63 too old? Not around here it ain't!LOL

Go to www.jdparts.com and select the appropriate parts catalog for the tractor (by style and S.N.) and determine the part number that is needed, and post back and GOOGLE the part number to see what is out there.

Who said too old? Deere dealer? They just didn't want to work on it.
Should be a bunch out there for salvage, my brother parted out a couple that people left water in and froze, broke the block through the mains.
I search for the part number AT14886, should be the one your looking for, don't forget to check the studs AM1514T.
Is this the parts breakdown of what your looking for?

Usually just the key way is wallowed out. Cut for a stepped key and purchase a new collar to weld on the steering shaft from Stiener.
New steering balls, bushings and seals are at the JD parts counter.
