cows in the snow pics

Took some pictures when I was out feeding today. Cows in the snow always make great pictures.

Morgan,

Thanks for the information. All I've ever raised is Black Angus cattle. Those horns on the Texas Longhorn would make me feel very uncomfortable, to say nothing of being unable to catch her in my head-catch.

The man on the next farm over from me has a bunch of mixed breed, primarily Hereford cows. I'm quite pleased for them to stay on their side of the fence.

Nice pics. Is the longhorn as gentle as people like to say they are?

I don't have cows (or any of that white stuff...snow...that ya'll keep speaking of here in central alabama)

Here's a pic of the lady's across the field from me, last summer. She has about 10 or so and just walks out to them to feed. They are much bigger and more intimidating now...lol

Do cattle outside in winter get concentrate feed as well as hay/silage? Do you use feeder rings to put the bales in?

Our beef cows are always outside as are most beef cows in the USA. We provide shelter for them but they seldom use it, preferring to be outside. It was 27f below zero here one day this winter and when I went to feed them the cattle were laying on some hay just chewing their cuds and looking very content.

(quoted from post at 07:25:56 03/01/15) Usually just hay, snow doesn't usually stay around
long here. Can't use feeder rings with the long
horns.

I'd not initially realised that Long Horns couldn't use feeder rings - a Homer Simpson moment DOH! :?

I guess because our winters are so wet that cattle outside tread the gateways & around feeder rings into a quagmire. Its called "poaching" here.
