snowing in texas

so as I sit in my nice comfy chair it is still steadily snowing here in Texas.. I live north west of dfw and we have got around 5 inches of the soft Powderly white stuff... so far this week this snow and sleet and ice has costed me three days of work.. I worked half a day today and came home cause the roads were getting very slick.. I'm so ready for next week.. they said the 70's are coming back.. cant wait

We haven't got nearly as much snow as you guys further east, but is still enough to shut everything down. Had freezing rain before the snow. Out here in Midland

well it quit snowing finally around 4 but now at 6 its back at it again.. we got around 5 inches already... i'm so ready for summer.. I need my 90 plus degree days back.. I rather sweat then freeze anyday

I'm on the other side of DFW in Terrell and we got about the same snow as will. Today most of it melted about as soon as it hit the ground. Still with the weather they got in Melissa TX we made a quick run to the store to make it through the weekend.

I've seen that much snow here the first day of summer. June 21 1992 in New Liskeard, Ontario if you don't believe me. There was a picture that looked about like that on the front page of The Temiskaming Speaker that week entitled "The first day of summer."

goose, us Texans see snow like once a year if we are lucky.. we mostly just see sleet and ice. so 5-6 inches of snow just totally messes up our roads and streets cause we are just not equipped like ya are up north.

"You shut down over THAT?"
Had to goose, yankees where out driving like the devil was chasing them. Multi car pile ups faster than tow trucks could clean them up.

I'm east of you a ways and got 2 yesterday afternoon and was still
snowing. I'm on my 3rd sack of Milo in a month feeding all the
"welfare birds".....Cheedees with a white stripe on their head,
Cardinals, and about a dozen of the large doves that started
coming around last year.

Roads are clean as a whistle, unlike the little 1/8" of glaze ice that
can wreak havoc on the whole shebang when it's ice, not snow.

I remember that date as well; that's our oldests child's birthday---and we had wet snow in the air here in Southern Ontario that day too..

Are your doves the "Collared doves"? I have Collared,White Wings & Mourning doves show up at my calf creep feeder.

Yes. Read a new item not too long ago that said that they invaded
us. Agree as I have never seen them before.

Was confused about your saying you were in Terrell and talking about Melissa at the same time till I read the Sherman (TX)-nnalert article entitled: 40 Car Pileup in Melissa.

Before I read the article, I thought 40 cars? On 75 going through Melissa with the visibility prevalent with the current snow? No way!

So I pulled up the article and it clarified it to 15. That's more like it and the 15 accounted for both sides of the road. Must have been some sleet right there as the roads are basically clear in this general area and had to be somewhat clear for vehicles to achieve the speed required for that sized pileup.

One thing that became apparently obvious in the photo in the article was the centerline barrier.

For you folks not familiar with our local barriers, used to be the state would put up concrete barriers that came in 40' lengths or thereabouts and bolt them together with straps. Works ok in town, but out from town some of the US highways, like US 75 in this article, are built to interstate standards and have a wide median of 50' or so. There they have recently, last few years, started putting down a concrete strip in the center of the median and on that strip put steel posts with 3 (as I recall) strands of cable for the obvious purpose to keep traffic on their side of the road.

You can see, the effort paid off for the occupants of the sedan in the picture. It was against the S bound side of the fence and on the N bound side, directly across from it was an 18 WHEELER!!!!!!!! Job well done Texas Department of Transportation.

Might just email the paper and see if they wouldn't send a usable copy of that photo to the DOT director in Austin (TX). Give him and the department a pat on the back for a job well done.

Now that there is funny! I've seen you guys and how you drive on ice. Funnies I saw was a good ole Texas boy that I drove around on a very slight hill in El Paso when there was fresh snow on the ground. I went around him in a station wagon, he was in a Jeep CJ7 with 4X4. He was having trouble figuring out that the gas pedal wasn't his friend on slick roads! But don't feel bad. Here in MN the first bit of slick roads in the fall and you can see just how many northern boys completely forgot ALL of their winter driving skills in just 6 months!
