1951 farmall super A

I have a 1951 farmall super a witch I've totally redone, I know the firing order but which cylinder is #1 radiator or cluch side. I have a 1957 851 ford and the front of the engine is where it hooks to the bell housing. What is the front of the Super A?

The front of the "A" engine , and Cyl #1 is on
the radiator end. Are you sure about the Ford ??
They don't number any other engine that way .....

Rest assured BOTH your Dorf and your Binder have the #1 cylinder located at the FRONT of the engine, nearest the radiator.

WHERE did you get the silly idea that the 851's #1 cylinder was next to the bellhousing???

Please ckeck you shop manual for a ford 851. The front of the engine hooks to the bell housing. Industrial engines power out the front towards the transmission where power is needed. Is ford the only one that does this?

Trust me my 1957 ford 851 #1 cylinder is on the clutch side, that is the front of an industrial engine. Are you sure International is is opposite?

There are a few exceptions, but the general rule is that #1 cylinder is the one farthest from the flywheel.

On a 4-cylinder engine, it doesn't make any difference. You can time it so that #1 is the front cylinder, or the rear cylinder.

All you do is put the cylinder on the compression stroke, line up the timing mark on the crank pulley, set the rotor to point to the #1 distributor cap post, and install the spark plug wires in order.

No internal changes are necessary.

Hi, I had a 3 ton international truck with
a v8 that had #1 cyl closest to firewall.
I was trying for 2 days to time it after
putting timing gear in. Had to phone the
dealer to find out that #1 was not, not, not
at the rad end. Ed will, my 2 cents.

I recently rebuilt my 48 Super A - I'm positive the #1 cylinder is in front, nearest the radiator.

It's an inline 4, and very different than the turck's 8.

It is completely under the control of how the cam is ground, I bet 99.9% are on front of motor. You super A should be.

I own about 20 red tiger engines from 54 thru 64. At least 2 are later replacement engines, all have #1 by the radiator!

Ed, those IH engines were numbered just like a Chevy V8... 1-3-5-7 (from the FRONT) on the driver's side, and 2-4-6-8 on the passenger side.

The cylinder numbers are in raised "letters" on the intake ports for all to see, in that order.

The ODDITY is that you TIME them on #8. That does NOT make #8 number one!

I looked in my Ford Tractor shop manual and on page 19 the picture shows the top of the block with the cylinders numbered from front of engine #1 being on the bell housing side. The manifold is on the left looking from the rear of the tractor. This is why I was concerned about my 51 Super A. Thanks for all the information.

Please share with us where you found this.

You are right. The cylinder numbers are cast onto the intake manifold, 1-3-5-7 on the left, 2-4-6-8 on the right, same as Chev. Firing order also cast onto manifold. Don't know why IHC had timing to #8, but they put a big yellow sticker on with instructions for timing.

As to the Super A. Every Farmall engine I have seen has the cylinder number cast onto the head, beside the spark plug, #1 at front.

I'm missing what you are saying. It looks to me that it says
"Front of Engine" on the left and "No 1 cyl" next to that.

If I'm sitting in the tractor seat the #1 cylinder is closest to me. The exaust and intake ports are on the left. Would't that make front of engine hooked to the bell housing. This did'nt make any sense to me when I chainged out the wiring.
