Underserrated knives

can you use smooth sickle guards with under serrated knives on a sickle mower? Right now I have the under serrated knives with the single guards with the serrated piece in the guard. I am looking at replacing the single guards with double and I am wanting to know it the smooth guards will work (no serrated edge in the guard opening). Thanks in advance.

I use smooth double guards, but I prefer top serrated sections in the sickle. Got personal reasoning for doing so, but double serrated sections could probly be used just the same.

If you replace single guards with double, smooth guards, then you might consider using an over-serrated knife.

We have double, smooth guards on both of our JD 350 sickle mowers with an over-serrated knives.

Hope this helps.

I think you use smooth edge knives for fine cutting like lawns or landscape cutting. My Gravely gets set up like that. If I want to cut out in the field I throw in the serrated knife set. The OLD guards were single and had serrated ledger plates. All of the new stuff is double guard and no plates. Field cutting only? On the net I found a PDF file for the little mower that goes on a Cub Cadet, All kinds of information and how to set the knifes up correctly.

Yes you can and they will cut grass great as long as you keep your sickle sharp. But good luck when you run out of under-serrated. I can not buy them anywhere anymore. Everyone has gone to the over-serrated which are self sharpening and cut fine in weeds and alfalfa but do not work worth a darn in dry hard grass.

I can get heavy duty chrome under serrated when and where ever I want. The local farm store has them and I get mine from the Deere dealer I work at. Under serrated is the only way to go in my opinion.

Go to Webbs Sickle Service website and he has a full explanation of the different types of sections what to cut with each etc.He also supplies about any type blade you'd need. His blades and sections are superior to any I have been able to find lately.

Webbs has JUNK. I bought sections that came from Webbs last summer. Were advertized to be Underserrated but what I got was , yeah you guessed it, Overserrated. Which would not be so bad if they would fit. The hole spacing is terrible. No two drilled alike. If the spacing is off even a tiny bit as you replace sections the spacing goes off more and more. and then you find yourself digging through the box for one that the holes line up. Then guess what happens when you break a section in the field and try to replace it. I will never buy sections from them again. I'll quit running cows first.

Well my experience has been totally different I have bought blades and sections from him for my Allis Chalmers and New Holland mowers several times with under serrated sections on them and all have been top quality.Much better than anything else I can find.
