Putting on the end steel today. Likely do the doors next week early. Kind of a long distance shot but I'll put up more later.

One about it,building it this early in the year, you'll get about a year tax free. If it had gone up in December, they would have had it on the assessment notice that just came in the mail. It won't show up until late February next year now.

Dave, In New York you get a ten yeaar exemption on real estate taxes for new farm building construction. Has to be primarily for agricultural activities. Farm shop falls in that category. Do you have anything like that in Michigan?

I put up a pole barn this fall. Assessor was on the scene even before it was done. Just got my new assessment and yup, it went up a bunch!

No,but we have 18 mils exempt for all qualified ag property and for some that isn't classified ag if it meets the requirements.

Car drives into the end of the driveway recently and stops. My driveway goes by the house and stops at the shop where I was. Since I seldom get company, I jumped on my home made Gator (JD 110 lawn mower with a removed, worn out deck), and proceeded down to see just who and why.

As I approached the vehicle I noticed a sign on the side of the car indicating that it was the tax assessor.

I pulled up along side and a young lady was driving and a guy in the passenger seat had a laptop. I said to them: Hi! With a big grin, I said "How Could I Possibly Make Your Day Brighter". Got a big smile from them. He asked if I had any thing newly built on the property. I said no and that I was satisfied with my current tax assessment and would appreciate them leaving it alone.

Got a nod and they left.

A good gate with a lock is all it takes. In Michigan you can decline access. When I built this house the assessor came to the door with a clipboard and asked if he could come in and look around. I told him no. In retrospect the house was built on a budget. Probably would have gotten lower taxes if I just let the guy in the door.

We have a one man accessors office, he has three ladies in there that do all the work I am sure. I dont think he rarely goes out. I guess he depends on peoples honesty to report. We had a neighbor that was a Gentleman farmer, retired Marine, and staunch church man. He told my dad that his rule of thumb on reporting the number of cattle he had, was to report half.

You catch a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Of course if you really want flies, you can't beat cow manure.
