I've backed off until the third week of April. If we don't start to get some decent spring weather one of these years,I'm gonna back off until May first.

When I had the Ranch at 9000' elev we calved out in May. Yes calves were light in the fall, but bought more per pound, so it worked out. Miss the wheat farming, but not the Ranching.

Thats great! You're a braver man than I. I shoot for the last week in April and most of the herd finishes by the end of May. I prefer to overshoot the freezing/muddy/nasty weather and calve when there's green grass and warmer weather. But, to each their own.

Talked to my nephew in ND this morning; he said that he expects calves to start dropping any day now. Once the calf gets dried off, the cold weather doesn't seem to bother them much. He'll be out checking them several times during the day and night. Has 120 cows to watch.

Yep,

Dry and out of the wind. Then, they are like any other critter and don't even have a conception of 'weather' or tempreature.

Allan it is amazing what they can take. I slowly switched to calving in May. I just do not like the harder work the earlier calving makes.

I also feed 100% of my calves out to finish so it does not really make any difference to me when they finish.

Good luck to you and the little fellow. I love watching the little guys run like crazy when they are young.

Dry, out of the wind, and enough to eat! Ours are supposed to start next week...glad to hear it's supposed to warm up a bit too.
