12 volt Starter from Napa auto parts

Hi everyone. does anyone know if this starter from napa is a true 12 volt starter? the parts guy doesn't even know. and will this fit for the 1951 ford 8N tractor? I will post link below. thank you.
Napa Starter

I'm not sure, but I'd say that starter probably would fit the 00 series if it's a 12 volt. Just my thoughts--you might want to check down on the 8N board. Keith

Not real likely to be a true 12 volt starter since it would have to have the armature and windings reworked to be a 12 volt starter. More likely to be a 6 volt starter which will work just fine on 12 volts. My 1950 8N has a 6 volt starter and has since we have owned it and that has been since around 1981 or so

Which raises another question... will a "flattie V8" car or truck starter work on an "N"?

I have often seen comments they won't interchange, but don't know for sure... if nothing else, the shaft length or "Bendix" pin hole location COULD be different???

That I do not know but then I have also never messed with a Ford flat head engine for a car or truck. I always thought it odd that ford had over head valve engines in there tractors a few years before they where in the cars

Boy, I don't know, if it's bigger, if so not by much I have a '53 flattie V8 truck starter in the shop, and a non-running late 8N sitting out in a snow bank... I may have to pull the starter and have a look!

I'm an old guy, Ford's 6 cyl auto engine of 1952 was an overhead. I believe the first overhead Ford tractor engine was the Jubilee.
IIRC

IIRC, the 53 Jube was the first Ford tractor with overhead valves.
In the cars/trucks they went to OHV 6 cyl in 53, V8 in 54.

Just change the bendix. I know I put one from a car on a friends tractor, but I don't remember what all I did to it.

Ford used that style starter yet in the 12V years of 56-64, but never with that mounting system, the 12V car / truck starters had mounting ears on the front casting.

I dont believe Ford used that earless mount on cars / trucks after 53 which would be 6V, unless it is a tractor starter.

If you want a true 12v you need to ask for a starter for a 56 to 64 ford car or truck. My 851 is running a 64 Galaxy 500 w a 390 starter. That's the strongest old style 12v ford used.

Old, you are talking blasphemy, there are ones here that swear 12V will not hold up on 6V starter.

Ya I know but ALL my tractors are 12 volts and ALL have 6 volt starters in them and I have how many?? You know I have a lot you have seen them

My MH44 was converted in early 70s, still same starter and drive. My H was converted about 10 years ago, ring gear was in a lot worse shape when that was done than 44 at that time.

Hi their, I went to Napa website and selected the 1964 galaxy 500 with a 390 engine. I will post the link below can you please tell me which starter is it? I am thinking its this Part# 449627. if that's the correct starter can I take off the starter ear cover where it mats to the engine block, and install my original 6 volt starter cover? will that work? thank you.
1964 galaxy 500 390 starter for 1951 ford 8n tractor

I just installed a true 12v starter. Got it from YT in 2 days. Starter and shipping $147, no tax. Starter works great. Much slower than the 6v starter.

Some 12v starters say they will work on 6 and 12v. I would avoided them.

(quoted from post at 19:41:10 02/22/15) But still the tractor came before the car. Had a friend years ago that had a 1954 ford car wit ha flat head V-8

If that '54 was U.S. built and it had a flat head it had an engine swap.Im not dead certain of this but think Canadian built Fords(Meteor?)had flat heads in '54.
The NAPA starter pictured is almost certainly a 6 volt
and looks like it would fit a N series tractor. The starter thru. bolts mount that starter.

Just use the 2 gauge auto type battery cables to lessen the amp to the starter so that the starter does not slam as hard is it would with the heavy 0 or 00 cables

ya I figured you don't need that. it was just a thought for me. but thank you very much for your help. you respond to reply's and that's excellent. have a good day.

A diode or light bulb in the #1 wire going from the alternator to the ignition is needed to keep for having run on due to back feeding by the alternator

I bought this indicator light from Oreilly's parts store. I will post link for it. would this be ok to use? I did put power to the Bat+ side of the light and the other end I ground it for the light to come on, but then when I remove the ground side from the light, light turns off. thanks
Indicator light

While your links are good being on dial up most of them I can not go to. If the light is hooked up in line in the #1 wire when the alternator is working the light will go out just like the idiot lights in a car or truck

That light most likely will not work by itself since it is a LED light. It will not pass enough current to excite the alternator. It should work if you wire3d a resistor in parallel with it. That would also allow the alternator to start to charge if the light should happen t burn out.

I used an LED light on my alternator conversion and it worked fine.

LED is light emitting DIODE. You need a diode to block the alternator from backfeeding the coil and keeping the engine running with the switch off.

Just make sure to install it in the correct direction or it won't work properly.

the way my LED indicator light works. when I put power to the Bat+ terminal on the light, it won't light until I ground the other end of the light. is that how it works if it was installed? thanks

If your wiring like a normal light yes but in the excite circuit of an alternator you have the wire coming off the #1 terminal and that goes to the ignition switch. The light will light when the key is turned on but go out when the alternator is charging

Hi their. I found these diodes online at frys electronics store. I will give you information on the two diodes that I researched. please tell me which diode is better for me on the tractor alternator 3 wire set up, and installing nearest to #1 terminal on alternator. thank you.

Frys# 1799305

Frys# 1799316

these are the frys# to type in the frys electronics website for you to view the diodes. thank you.

I have always used the Radio Shack 276-1661 which is a 6 amp plus so way over kill but now that radio shack if going under they will be hard to find

Do not know being on dial up I can not go to many web sites with out it taking 15 plus minutes to down load. Give me the specs and I can then tell you

Any one of them would do but I would go with the highest amp rating just because it is the highest. The sliver band on them goes to the alternator side of the wiring

Hi their, I forgot to ask you. their is a ground bolt on the back side of the alternator, I think its a ground bolt. do I have to install a wire from that bolt from alternator to a good ground on the tractor or alternator brackets. also please tell me what gauge wire should I use for grounding the alternator? thank you.

You do not have to ground t since the mount will do the same thing. Yes it is there but some car type mounts have rubber bushings so they loose the ground so that is why that ground stud is on them
