Bad Timing to overhaul

Good afternoon I'm new to the forum but have been in & out of Yesterdays tractor site for 12 years. Looks like I Picked a bad time to start overhauling my Oliver 550 diesel. By the end of Jan. the weather here in Eastern Virginia was mild so I started breaking it down And just as luck would have it when I reached the point of no return The Talking heads on the tv started with OMG its coming and it did They actually got it right so now its down to a shovel and a 4 wheel pickup. My sweety was not swayed by the loss of old smoky. Have to get to the fire wood she said. When we dug out she asked how long will it be before the tractor is better? She didn't seem too pleased with I'm working on it.

Welcome to the joy of owning equipment, especially older equipment.

IF your not in a heated building then this overhaul is really going to be fun in the weather that has been going on.

I have heat, thermos, radio and a couple of mice. I've really enjoyed this tractor, I've gotten 12 good years out of it.When I got it there was so much wrong with it the wife questioned my judgement until i showed her the cost between apples & oranges.

You are so right about that. I have a 53 8n I picked up for 500.00 but didn't do anything but park it. needs a few $ time and would make a good back up

No such thing as a 1953 8N last year the 8N was made was 1952. In 1953 the Jubilee came out and it was not even close to being an 8N. 8N has flat head engine and the Jubilee has a valve in head engine. So what do you have????

I know very little about this tractor the guy said 53 I drove it home and parked it. It does have a flat head the plugs are in the top. I'll check it out thanks for the heads up.

You are a little further east than me. I am near Millers Tavern. I have a friend that lives on the other side of the bridge from you in White Stone. Nice area.

If it has a 5 nipple distributor cap it will be a late 1950 to 1952. Some time around April or May of 1950 they went from the front mount distributor to the side mount. If it has the front mount distributor with the 4 nipple cap it will be a 1948 to early 1950. I have both types of the 8N on my place. My 1950 with side mount has a loader and back hoe on it

I feel your pain. I need to spend time finding out what happened to my 43 2N but we have gotten 2 - 3 ft of snow since she got parked 3 weeks ago. Have to wait till at least May.

I'm rebuilding the engine on my '52 8N right now and it does get a bit "nippy" in the barn. I have a little space heater I set behind me just so I can feel my fingers. Gets pretty chilly when it's down to 15 F or so.

Hard to figure our Virginia weather, last storm the snow was so light you could brush 6 inches off the deck with a broom. This storm the snow was so deep and heavy it was stalling my IH, had to make a few passes with the back blade to clear the road.

Just moved from central MD to Gloucester County VA. mid
January. Didn't expect this much snow here. Have a plow for my
pickup, bobcat, farmall Super A and a 582 cub cadet with plows
still sitting in Maryland as I haven't had time to get back up
there. Have been hand shoveling 300ft drive and walks. Poor
planning on my part I guess.
